    • An electronic detection system for accurately monitoring the coolant level and temperature of an internal combustion engine, utilizing a unit which may be installed within the cab of a vehicle to provide the operator with a visual and audible warning if the engine temperature starts to rise above its normal hottest operating temperature indicating an overheat condition, and/or when coolant level drops below a given level in the coolant reserve tank indicating a coolant loss problem or the need to replenish coolant due to evaporation, and/or a complete loss of engine coolant, thereby preventing damage that may be caused by overheating. In a particular embodiment of the invention, the overheat detection system comprises a heat sensor, e.g. thermistor, within a bolt which may be screwed directly into the engine head. In a further embodiment, an additional heat sensor, e.g., a thermistor or a heat responsive switch, positioned in the bottom radiator hose, is used in series with the engine head sensor. The circuitry used therewith is adjustable when installed to provide an alarm activation when the temperature is a few degrees above the hottest normal operating temperature of the individual engine in which they are installed. Thus, if the engine starts to overheat, an LED lights up and an audible alarm sounds. Further, a coolant level detector is also used to detect a drop in the coolant level and comprises two probes which may be installed horizontally in a side wall of the coolant reserve tank to provide a current path through the coolant present between the probes. Circuitry which includes an appropriate timing means is connected to the probes to warn the driver, by a visual LED indicator and/or by an audible alarm sound when the coolant level drops below a predetermined level. In a further embodiment, additional coolant probes may be installed in the top radiator hose previously to warn the driver by visual and/or audible alarm if there is a sudden and substantially complete loss of coolant.
