    • Synchronization of a horizontal deflection circuit with horizontal synchronizing signal pulses is obtained by the use of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) that is included in a phase-lock loop circuit (PLL). A phase-control loop circuit (PCL) includes a phase detector having a first input terminal that is responsive to an output signal of the VCO and a second input terminal that is responsive to retrace pulses of a horizontal deflection circuit output stage. A sum signal of the phase detector output signal of the PLL and a vertical rate parabola signal is formed upstream of the loop filter of the PLL. Correction of a differential pin distortion is accomplished by dynamically phase shifting the phase of an output signal of the VCO in a vertical rate parabola manner.

    • An electron beam tends to slope downwardly as it is deflected horizontally to form a raster in a video display apparatus. The sloping of the beam can cause geometric errors in the raster, for example orthogonality and parallelogram errors. A raster correction circuit substantially offsets the downward slope of the electron beam by modulating a vertical deflection current with an induced horizontal-rate raster correction current, thereby substantially eliminating orthogonality and parallelogram errors in the raster. In respective embodiments of an inventive arrangement taught herein, the horizontal-rate raster correction current is induced in the vertical deflection coils by magnetically coupling a filament pulse waveform, a horizontal deflection voltage waveform, or a horizontal deflection current into the vertical deflection coils.

    • A horizontal deflection circuit including a horizontal deflection output circuit and a horizontal sawtooth wave current generation circuit. The horizontal output deflection circuit has a horizontal deflection coil and an S-shape capacitor connected in series with the horizontal deflector coil for supplying a horizontal deflection current to the horizontal deflector coil and the S-shape capacitor in accordance with a horizontal drive pulse. The horizontal sawtooth wave current generation circuit supplies a horizontal sawtooth wave current to the S-shape capacitor in a direction opposite to the horizontal deflection current and has a power voltage thereof controlled so that a difference current between the horizontal deflection current and the horizontal sawtooth wave current flowing in the S-shape capacitor has an amplitude proportional to a horizontal deflection frequency raised to a power N, where N has a value greater than 1, thereby enabling continuous S-shape correction independent of changes in the horizontal deflection frequency. A display apparatus utilizing the horizontal deflection circuit provides for S-shape correction with a maximum linearity error at a constant value of less than 5%.

Each of the p-th order sub-functions (Sfi) can be written as a linear combination of polynomials of the position address (P) multiplied with associated sub-function coefficients (bi). Further, each of the p-th order sub-functions (Sfi) can be imagined to be obtained by an addition, in a section (Si), of portions (pi) of basic functions (Fbi) each multiplied by an associated one of the predetermined values (ai). The basic functions (Fbi) are p-th order spline functions. Each of the portions (pi) of the basic functions (Fbi) is written as a linear combination of portion coefficients (cij) corresponding to polynomials of the position address (P). The polynomials range from zero order up to the p-th order. The portion coefficients (cij) determine the shape of the basic p-th order spline functions (Fbi). Each of the sub-function coefficients (bi) can be calculated from the selected values (asi) by multiplying a matrix including the portion coefficients (cij) with the selected values (asi). The matrix must be a spline matrix to obtain sub-functions (Sfi) together composing the spline waveform (Cw). The process of converting the selected values into one of the sub-function coefficients is the same in every section (Si) since a fixed matrix of portion coefficients (cij) or multiplication factors is used.

The vertical ramp and scanning correction signal and second and fourth order signals are individually scaled and combined in accordance with a set of gain control signals to produce the horizontal scanning correction signal.
