    • The horizontal frequency control pulses of, respectively, increasing and decreasing pulse widths required by switches which control the transfer of energy from the horizontal output stage to the vertical deflection coils are furnished by a first and second comparator. Each of the comparators is a difference amplifier having an inverting and a direct input. The inverting input of the first comparator is connected only through a resistor to the output of a vertical frequency sawtooth generator and, similarly, only through a resistor, to the output of a stage which furnishes horizontal deflection frequency pulses having slanted pulse tops. The direct input of the second comparator is also connected, through a decoupling resistor only, to the output of the vertical sawtooth generator and, while its inverting input is connected to the output of the stage which furnishes the shaped horizontal frequency pulses. The direct input of the first comparator is connected to receive a DC voltage and to receive the output of a stage which furnishes positive vertical blanking pulses. To stabilize the height of the television picture, the voltage drop across a resistor in series with the vertical deflection coils is applied to the output of the vertical sawtooth generator, so that a negative feedback is provided.

    • A trace current is generated in a horizontal deflection winding upon closure of a trace switch. A retrace capacitor forms a resonant retrace circuit with the deflection winding upon open-circuiting of the trace switch. A second resonant circuit is coupled to an energy supply and stores energy when the trace switch is closed. A second switch couples the resonant retrace circuit to the second resonant circuit during retrace. The stored energy in the second resonant circuit is then transferred to the resonant retrace circuit and to other load circuits, such as a flyback transformer.

    • A saw-tooth wave generator including thyristors is provided in the vertical deflection circuit, the thyristors controlling charging and re-charging of a charge capacitor. A portion of the energy contained in the line retrace and delivered from the horizontal output stage is used in order to provide current for the vertical deflection coil. In order to prevent spurious or erroneous operation of the thyristors, an oppositely poled bias voltage is applied to the gates of the thyristors during the pauses or intervals of triggering of the thyristors, the bias voltage being derived externally or directly from the thyristor control circuit, for example by utilizing the inductive reverse-polarity kick of an inductance connecting the thyristor gate to its control circuit, by a charge-reverse re-charge circuit of a capacitor, or the like.

    • An input switching thyristor of a deflection circuit is selectively excited at a sweep rate by a transistorized driver stage. A separate protective thyristor is disposed in a DC power source that supplies operating bias to the driver stage and to the switching thyristor via a supply capacitor. Initially, the supply capacitor is partially charged through a high-ohmic shunt resistor that budges the protective thyristor, whose control electrode is coupled to the output of the switching thyristor. A portion of the resulting voltage across the partially charged supply capacitor is applied via a voltage divider and a Zener diode to the base of a threshold-operated transistor that normally blocks the driver stage. When the supply capacitor has charged to a predetermined minimum value necessary to assume turn-on of the protective thyristor, the threshold-operated transistor is triggered to permit the driver stage to operate the switching thyristor at the sweep rate. The resulting turn-on of the protective thyristor permits the rapid completion of charge of the supply capacitor to its normal operating voltage, and thereafter provides full overload protection for the deflection circuit.
