    • A fluorescent screen formed on the inner surface of the face plate of a color picture tube comprises a plurality of spaced apart light absorbing layers between adjacent matrix windows, light reflection layers formed on the light absorbing layers, stripe shaped three color phosphors respectively formed between adjacent light reflection layers to fill the matrix windows, and a metal back layer covering the light reflection layers and the three color phosphors. Each light reflection layer takes the form of a triangular section having a height substantially equal to the thickness of the three color phosphors and the opposite sides of the triangle incline toward the sides of the matrix windows. The width of each window is equal to the difference between a maximum electron beam diameter and one half the difference between the pitch of the windows and the width of each window.

    • The subject matter of this invention is a single gun color TV tube having a means for generating a beam of electrons such as an electron gun, and a means for sequentially receiving red, green, and blue color information in a predetermined order for modulating the electron beam, such as a control electrode. The target area of the tube includes a plurality of spaced red, green, and blue phosphor strips generally vertically disposed and arranged in a predetermined order. On the electron receiving face of each phosphor strip there is deposited a conductive coating. In operation the coatings on the strips corresponding to the color information modulating the beam have applied thereon a positive potential while a lower or negative potential is being applied to the coatings on the other phosphor strips for focusing the electron beam. A guard band preferably having a height greater than that of the phosphor strips is disposed between adjacent phosphor strips, each of which has deposited thereon a conductive coating for receiving a fixed positive potential so as to attract stray electrons generally due to secondary emission.

    • A dot matrix type fluorescent display device including anode segments arranged at fine pitches is provided which is capable of facilitating arrangement of grids and substantially preventing leakage luminance. A plurality of anode segments are arranged to defined a matrix. Each three wiring conductors are arranged for every anode row. The anode segments in each row are connected to the same writing conductors at every third interval. Each one mesh grid is arranged in correspondence to every two columns of anode segments. The anodes each are arranged so as to outwardly extend by distance one third as large as a dimension thereof from the grid. Each adjacent two grids are applied thereto a positive potential and shifted one by one. Of four columns of anodes corresponding to two grids, two columns of anodes positioned inside the grids are fed with a display signal. Unselected anodes adjacent thereto are likewise fed with the display signal, however, impingement of electrons on the unselected anodes is effectively prevented because an interval between the grids adjacent to each other is increased.

    • A low-cost, deeply filtered television imge display is depicted. A viewing screen includes a patterned layer of phosphor particles disposed contiguous to the inner surface of the display. The layer when excited emits light of a predetermined color. The display includes means for exciting selected areas of the layer to produce a luminescent informational image. The image is subject to loss of contrast caused by reflection of ambient light from the layer. The improvement comprises a shallow, random, clumped, discontinuous, open dispersion of contrast-enhancing particles of pigment having a body color corresponding generally to the predetermined color disposed directly on the viewing screen beneath the layer and not significantly admixed with the phosphor particles. The percentage of open area of the dispersion of pigment particles and the absorption characteristics thereof are such that the dispersion efficiently filters ambient light at its interface with the layer. This filtering is accomplished first by absorption of directly incident ambient light, and secondly by absorption of ambient light passing through the open dispersion and scattering back off the phosphor particles to the dispersion. The dispersiion represents a tolerable impediment to image light emitted by the phosphor particles due to the shallowness and openness of the dispersion and its non-absorption of light of said predetermined color. The dispersion negligibly absorbs electron beam energy due to its location beneath the layer. As a result, deep filtration of ambient light and thus high picture contrast is made practicable without a disproportionately countervailing loss in picture brightness.

    • A cathode ray tube screen comprising a luminescent layer formed by two kinds of phosphors in predetermined proportions, one exhibiting persistence and the other not exhibiting persistence. The persistent phosphors are associated with a barrier material, which is not luminescent under electron bombardment and requires a predetermined accelerating voltage for the electron to pass therethrough. The barrier material either encloses the persistent phosphors, which then form a mixture with the non persistent phosphors, or is deposited as a layer between a layer of non persistent phosphors exposed to the incident electron beam and a layer of persistent phosphors.
