    • A combustion apparatus has a burner, a combustion box containing therein a heat exchanger, an exhaust passage in fluid communication with the combustion box, a fan for supplying the burner with combustion air, and a predetermined length of air suction duct in fluid communication with a suction opening formed in a fan casing. The air suction duct has: on a downstream end thereof, an outlet cylindrical portion which is smaller in diameter than a diameter of the suction opening in the fan casing and which lies opposite to the suction opening; and a flange portion which overhangs radially outward from a perimeter of the air suction duct adjacent to the outlet cylindrical portion into contact with that peripheral portion of the fan casing which forms the suction opening. The flange portion is provided with an auxiliary suction opening in fluid communication with a space surrounding the outlet cylindrical portion.

    • A gas turbine engine combustor defining a combustion zone therein and being adapted for receiving compressed air from a compressor. The combustor comprises inner and outer walls spaced-apart by a predetermined spacing distance and defines a cavity therebetween. The outer wall has a first area defining at least an impingement aperture therein, the impingement aperture permits fluid flow communication between the compressor and the cavity. The inner wall has a second area corresponding to the first area and defines a plurality of effusion apertures therein, the effusion apertures permitting fluid flow communication between the cavity and the combustion zone, and each of the effusion aperture defines a cross-sectional area smaller than that of the impingement aperture. The effusion apertures are disposed in groups having a predetermined geometric arrangement relative to the impingement aperture and define a ratio of number of effusion apertures to the impingement aperture of between about 2:1 and about 4:1. The combustor thereby provides damping of audible frequencies less that about 1600 Hz passing therethrough.

    • A gas burner is provided for use on the inlet end of a fire tube, and includes a mixer having attached to it a gas delivery pipe, fuel gas and air being combined in the mixer to provide mixed gas and air. A venturi is secured at its inlet end to the mixer to receive the flow of gas and air, the venturi serving to draw air into the mixer. A burner nozzle is affixed to the venturi outlet end and the burner nozzle and extends within the fire tube. A perforated tube surrounds the mixer/venturi and at least a portion of the burner nozzle. A sound absorbing flame cell housing surrounds the perforated tube. A flame arrestor closes an air inlet opening in the flame cell housing air and serves to permit air to pass into the flame cell housing but prohibits the passage of flame therethrough so that flame is confined within the interior of the flame cell housing. A sound absorbing flame arrestor cover is supported exteriorly of the flame cell housing and adjacent the flame arrestor and configured to permit free passage of air into the flame cell housing through the flame arrestor but prohibiting straight line passage of sound through the flame arrestor from the interior to the exterior of the flame cell housing.

    • The invention is intended to suppress oscillatory combustion of a combustion apparatus. In the invention, acoustic closed ends are provided at an inlet side and an outlet side of the burner port unit, and the combustion apparatus is constituted so that the flame may be positioned between these closed ends, and a buffer chamber is provided at the inlet side. Thus, when the inlet side and outlet side of the burner port unit of the combustion apparatus are formed as acoustic closed ends, oscillatory combustion occurs easily. At this time, when the intake tube communicates at the upstream side of the inlet side closed end, and an exhaust tube communicates at the downstream side of the outlet side closed end, if the length of the intake tube and exhaust tube is changed, the air ratio and combustion amount for generating oscillatory combustion remain constant, and the oscillation frequency and oscillation pressure remain constant. In such condition, when a sound absorbing unit is provided in the buffer chamber, oscillation does not occur, and if the intake tube or exhaust tube is extended, oscillation does not occur.
