    • A self-contained thermally actuated flow-control valve assembly comprises a base, an actuator, and a return member. The base has a longitudinal axis, a stop surface and a retention wall. The actuator has a generally cylindrical guide, a piston, a diaphragm, a thermally active pellet, and a generally cylindrical cup. The guide has an exterior surface on which a plurality of retention members are configured. The piston assembly is coaxial with the longitudinal axis. The generally cylindrical cup has a leading wall, a sidewall contiguous with the leading wall, and a trailing shoulder axially opposite the leading wall. The return member has axially opposed first and second ends. The first end engages the retention members and the second end engaging the base. The return member exerts a biasing force on the actuator axially towards said base. The actuator exerts a variable actuating force in a direction axially opposite the biasing force.

    • An expansion valve 1 comprises a piping member 10 equipped with passages to which refrigerant pipes are connected, and a cassette unit 100, the two members being formed as separate units. The cassette unit 100 comprises a tube member 110 having a flange portion 111, and at the interior of the tube member 110 are fixed a guide member 170, an orifice member 180, and a plate member 166. The pressure of the gas filled in a gas charge chamber 122 defined by a lid 120 and a diaphragm 130 displaces the diaphragm 130, the displacement being transmitted through a stopper member 140 to a shaft member 150. The shaft member 150 is guided by a guide member 170 and controls the valve means 160 inside a valve chamber 161. The cassette unit 100 is inserted to the piping member 10 and fixed to position by a ring 50. Seal members 62, 64, and 66 are equipped to appropriate areas between the cassette unit and the piping member.

Preferably, the casing comprises an entrance casing member having the inlet connecting portion and an exit casing member having the outlet connecting portion, and the casing members are fixedly joined together to thereby contain the valve body.

    • A thermostatic expansion valve has a valve shell, e.g., housing, with a high-pressure refrigerant passage and a low-pressure refrigerant passage. The high pressure refrigerant passage has a valve hole and a valve member that changes the valve hole opening rate. A pressure-operating chamber, which has an air-tight chamber and an equalizing chamber separated by a diaphragm, drives the valve member. This pressure-operating chamber, which is attached to the valve shell to detect the temperature, detects the temperature of gaseous phase refrigerant. The valve shell has a hole or opening extending through its outer wall. A plug member seals the hole after a heat-sensitive gas, which senses the temperature of the gas-phase refrigerant passing through the expansion valve, is introduced into the housing through the opening. The plug member is seated on the peripheral edge of the opening and welded to the opening peripheral edge by projection welding. An anti-corrosive material is applied to cover the welded area.

    • A mixing valve having a modular cartridge containing a volume control valve and a thermostatic valve. The cartridge comprises a tubular sleeve having rotatably disposed therein a hollow cylindrical housing containing a valve plate mounted on its bottom end. The valve plate cooperates with a fixed valve plate in a nose piece of the cartridge to control the volumetric flow of water into the cartridge. An inner housing is disposed within the hollow cylindrical housing and defines therewith cold and hot water inlet passageways which are in communication with a mixing chamber in the interior of the inner housing via cold and hot water supply openings. The thermostatic control valve includes a temperature responsive element disposed in the mixing chamber which is operably connected to a piston which is axially slidably movable in a cylinder. The cylinder is fixedly mounted on the top of the inner housing with the bottom of the cylinder and the top of the inner housing defining the hot water supply opening and the top of the cylinder defining with an inner shoulder in the cylindrical housing the cold water supply opening. Upward movement of the piston serves to close off the cold water supply opening while downward movement of the piston serves to close off the hot water supply opening.
