    • An improved method and apparatus for monitoring the concentration of contaminants, including volatile organic compounds, in groundwater is provided comprising a semipermeable membrane defining an inner chamber therein. The membrane is permeable to contaminants but impermeable to a reference fluid, which is preferably distilled water. The method of sampling comprises placing the semipermeable membrane, which contains the reference fluid, in contact with contaminated groundwater, thereby allowing contaminants to diffuse through the semipermeable membrane and into the inner chamber. Sufficient time is allowed for the contaminant concentrations in the groundwater and in the reference fluid to reach equilibrium. The semipermeable membrane is then removed from contact with the groundwater, and a sample withdrawn from the inner chamber for analysis, preferably through a port communicating with the inner chamber.

    • A lysimeter comprises a longitudinally extending circumferentially perforated duct having a vacuum application connection at one end thereof. A fluid permeable fabric is superposed over the duct perforations. A longitudinally extending circumferentially perforated shell extends about the duct and therewith defines a bounded volume therebetween. A granular filler substantially fills the bounded volume and the filler is sized so not to be drawn through the fluid permeable fabric so that a vacuum applied to the duct is transmitted through the shell.A ground protection system for a heap leaching site incorporating the lysimeter of the present invention is also disclosed as well as a method of assembling the lysimeter.

    • A soil solution sampler is constructed of stainless steel by joining a porous stainless steel tube to a non-porous stainless steel tube to form a soil solution receptacle. Air and sample transfer conduits extend from the earth's surface into the receptacle. By drawing a vacuum on the air conduit, soil solution is drawn through the porous wall into the buried sampler. After collection, the sample is transferred to the surface through the sample transfer conduit by applying positive air pressure to the air conduit. In one embodiment, a divider wall having a port and one-way check valve separates the receptacle into an upper soil solution entry chamber having a porous wall, and a lower collection chamber into which the air and sample transfer conduits extend.
