    • An apparatus for reducing the load on a weft thread being inserted into a loom shed reduces the necessary number of weft thread monitors or stop motion devices functioning as thread tension sensors while still ensuring a reliable tension measurement, especially in a gripper loom in which a plurality of different weft thread types are to be respectively inserted into the loom shed using a weft thread selector and insertion arrangement. A single first thread tension sensor (14) is provided to be common to all of the weft thread types (6) that are to be inserted. The sensor (14) is arranged in a first arrangement plane at a location downstream of the weft thread selector and change arrangement (8). A single second thread tension sensor (19) is arranged in a second arrangement plane at a location between the first thread tension sensor (14) and the weft thread selector and change arrangement (8). Thus, only two thread tension sensors are used, in series, for the total of all weft thread types that are to be inserted into the loom shed, and therefore all the tension values are directly comparable with one another.

    • A stopping mechanism includes a brake device for an insertion device and a detector for determining the position of the insertion device. The detector includes a sensor which subjects the insertion device to electromagnetic radiation in the microwave range and operates on the Doppler principle. The position of the insertion device is determined by counting the number of crossover points of the Doppler signal in relation to a reference position. The detector has a high degree of resolution and is particularly suitable for looms using gripper shuttles. It is also highly flexible in the location in which the sensor may be arranged in the stopping mechanism.

    • The invention disclosed herein relates in general to fly shuttle looms and specifically to improvement in means for shuttle boxing and protection stopping. With conventional boxing methods, difficulties are often experienced due to failure of the shuttle to consistently stop in precise position within the box. This invention discloses means for overcoming such difficulties by providing reduced impact forces and greater frictional resistance for stopping the shuttle. A novel means is revealed for relieving frictional resistance as the shuttle is ejected from the box. Disclosed is improved shuttle binder design which provides for early shuttle contact and makes possible a novel disclosed method for shockless stopping. Related means for effecting loom stop in event of jammed shuttle or fill thread break is disclosed. Means for positional stopping of the loom on command is disclosed as a desireable related feature.
