    • A method of charging coal into a chamber furnace-type coke oven. The coal is fed from a table feeder from a coal hopper so as to be dropped and charged into a carbonization chamber of the coke oven, through a charging cylinder. The coal fed from the table feeder is accelerated by rotation vanes at the initial stage in which the coal starts to drop. The vanes have a rotation center which is located upward on the exterior of a locus of the stream of free fall gravitated by the coal. The rotation speed of the vanes is progressively increased in the latter half of charging of the coal. The coal is thus allowed to accumulate in the carbonization chamber so that the bulk density of the coal in the vertical direction can become uniform. Also disclosed is an apparatus for charging coal into a chamber furnace-type coke oven. The apparatus includes a coal hopper for storing the coal therein. A table feeder feeds the coal from the hopper. Rotation vanes increases the speed of the coal fed from the feeder at the initial stage in which the coal drops from the feeder. The vanes have a rotation center which is located upward on the exterior of a locus of the stream of free fall gravitated by the coal. A charging cylinder guides the coal, which has been accelerated by the vanes and dropped into the carbonization chamber.

    • The gas-tight closure comprises a thin walled tubular piece projecting from a feeding duct into a filling space, a thin walled conical jacket having its larger bottom base provided with a rigid seal reinforcing member cooperating with the lower rim of the intake tubular piece. The outer periphery of the reinforcing member is slanted about a small angle to snugly fit into the tubular piece and adjust the form thereof when upward pull is exerted upon the conical jacket by means of an actuation rod passing outwardly through the wall of the feeding duct. The actuation rod has preferably the form of a hollow shaft which accommodates the manipulation rod of a scraper projecting radially below the reinforcing member into the filling space. The outside portion of the actuation rod is provided with a control device in the form of clamping plates cooperating with abutment plates resting on the guiding sleeve for the actuation rod. The clamping plates are manipulated by means of separate levers.

    • A solids feeder and method for transporting particulate solids from an elevated solids feed reservoir and introducing the solids upwardly into the bottom of a solids upflow vessel. The feeder includes a stationary feed cylinder axially aligned with a bottom solids inlet of the upflow vessel and fitted with a vertically reciprocatable piston which alternately (1) retracts to allow the feed cylinder to receive solids from the feed reservoir by gravity flow through a feed chute and (2) extends to displace the solids upwardly into the upflow vessel. Horizontally reciprocatable slide plates prevent backflow of solids during the filling of the feed cylinder.
