    • A gas jumper arrangement for a coke oven is composed of adjacently arranged coke oven chambers each having a gas opening with rims at the top portion thereof. The gas jumper arrangement overlaps gas openings of two adjacent coke oven chambers by one lid chamber each. The two lid chambers are connected in a duct-like manner by a gas jumper pipe and lids covering the gas openings during filling of a coke oven chamber are displaceable from an opened position into a closed position and settable into a rotational movement within the lid chambers by an actuation device. In order to ensure the tightness of the gas openings at the rims thereof even at larger pressure fluctuations and to enable the introduction of inert gas into the gas jumper arrangment, both the lid and the rim of each gas opening includes valve-face type sealing surfaces that mate with each other when pressed against each other in the closed position of the lid. A feed line for supplying an inert gas runs into the gas jumper arrangement. An inert gas pressure prevails in the gas jumper arrangement with the lids closed which is in excess of the pressure prevailing in the coke oven chambers.

    • A method of cooling and dedusting degasification gases which escape from coal degasification chambers particularly gases which are obtained in high temperature or low temperature carbonization of bituminous and subbituminous coals and which pass from degasification chambers through risers and bends into collection mains and in the bends or in the collecting mains themselves which comprises directing crude tar having a temperature in excess of 50.degree. C. and lower than 170.degree. C. into the bends and collecting mains either alone or with water added which has a temperature and is of a quantity such that it completely evaporates in the collecting main. An apparatus for carrying out the method includes means for spraying either the tar or the tar plus water into the collecting main containing the degasification gases and passing the gases and the liquids from the main into a cooler to separate the gases and a liquid condensate and the tar oil from the condensate and which includes means for directing the crude tar through a separator for separating the heavy tar from a remaining portion of the tar and further directing the remaining portion through a supply tank and a centrifuge for removing solid matter therefrom.

    • Charging gases from each coking chamber in a battery of coke ovens are withdrawn through a closable ascension pipe into only a first gas main. The gases liberated during carbonization of the coal charge in each oven chamber are withdrawn through a closable ascension pipe into only a second gas main throughout the remainder of the carbonization process. The gases in each gas main are sprayed with flushing liquor. Gases are continuously transferred from the second gas main through pipes into the first gas main to equalize the gas pressure within the gas mains. Flushing liquor removed from the first gas main is processed to remove the tar content therefrom and to provide a clear flushing liquor which is used to spray charging gases within the first gas main. Gases and flushing liquor removed from the second gas main undergo separation whereupon the gas phase is discharged for further processing and the liquid phase undergoes separation to remove solids and tars therefrom, thus providing clear flushing liquor for reuse to spray gases in the second gas main.

    • A coke dry quenching installation has a cooling chamber having a top charging opening, a travelling crane above the cooling chamber, and a coke bucket on the travelling crane movable to a position above the top charging opening and having a cover thereon. A hopper chute is positioned between the coke bucket and the top charging opening on the cooling chamber and is movable laterally toward and away from a position over the top charging opening, the hopper chute having a bottom opening which when the hopper chute is over the top charging opening is aligned in substantial gas tight alignment with the top charging opening. The coke bucket has a bottom opening which engages in sealing engagement with the top opening of the hopper chute when the coke bucket is lowered toward the cooling chamber by the travelling crane. A waste gas collecting system for the installation has a first dust collecting duct extending from the cover of the coke bucket laterally thereof, a second dust collection duct extending laterally from the hopper chute, a main dust collecting duct adjacent the cooling chamber, a first branch duct extending from the main duct and having a free end in a position where it is connected to the free end of said first duct when the coke bucket is in position on the hopper chute, and a second branch duct extending from the main duct and having a free end in a position where it is connected to the free end of the second duct when the hopper chute is in position over the top charging opening of the cooling chamber.
