    • A device for handling objects is provided, comprising at least one inflatable air chamber and a retaining unit for objects, which is attached to the air chamber, to a robot or manipulator, characterized by at least one device for handling objects. Also provided is a method for handling objects using the aforementioned device, characterized by the steps of: moving the device with the side thereof comprising the retaining unit to the object to be handled in a first position; establishing an adhesive connection between the retaining unit and the object to be handled, thus retaining the object; moving the device to a desired second position, and releasing the object from the retaining unit by inflating the at least one air chamber.

    • An apparatus for the conjoint gripping of bobbins by means of pins or spigots formed of a rigid material, mounted at a support or carrier, and insertable into the bobbins. An expansible hose or tube member extends lengthwise of the support, this hose member when subjected to an increased internal pressure serving to press the bobbins against the pins or pin members inserted therein. This known apparatus has the advantage that there does not occur damage to the entering pin members, nor does there arise permanent deformation or destruction thereof. Yet, such apparatus possesses the shortcomings that the seized bobbins, when pressed against the pin members, are not positioned with sufficient accuracy in a direction parallel to the longitudinal direction of the support. The invention avoids such drawback in that, there are provided two straight edges at each pin member at the side thereof confronting the hose member, such too straight edges extending in the longitudinal direction of the related pin member and serving as contact surfaces for the bobbin pressed thereagainst.

    • A clamp assembly (12) is disclosed for controllably gripping an article (10). Automated material handling devices generally require sensor and control devices to adapt the device to variously sized and shaped articles. Also, the application of excess contact force between the clamping device and article may damage vulnerable surfaces and features of the article being handled. The present invention solves the above problem by providing a clamp assembly (12) having opposed, pressurizable gripping members (64,66). The gripping members (64,66) each have a compliant, article-contacting surface (67,68) which form about the article (10) upon pressurization of the gripping members (64,66). The invention is of particular benefit in handling a wide range of differently sized stepped-diameter shafts.

    • An automated brick hacker is disclosed which includes an inverter stacker operable to position one elongated cut or uncut slug of unfired brick material on a subsequent cut or uncut slug. In one embodiment, an inverter is pivoted for movement between a position aligned with an off-bearing belt and an inverted position over the belt. A pusher operates to slide alternate slugs from the off-bearing belt onto the inverter. Vacuum means grip the slug while it is inverted and positioned over the subsequent slug on the off-bearing belt. In another embodiment, an inverter stacker is provided which is operable to grip lateral sides of a slug along its length and raise the slug for positioning on a subsequent slug with or without inversion. A pusher drivingly engages the rearward end of a cut slug for movement into the inverter and spaces adjacent slugs without creating spaces between bricks in the slug. A pneumatic gripper is provided to gently, but securely, grip a plurality of bricks for transfer from one location to another.
