    • An apparatus for mounting a tire on a wheel rim includes a mounting head with a tire bead deflector and a tire press-in roller, and a drive that moves the mounting head toward, and rotates the bead deflector and the press-in roller around, the wheel rim. To avoid a damage-causing contact between the bead deflector and the wheel rim, an arrangement for monitoring a minimum spacing distance between the wheel rim and the mounting head is arranged preferably on the bead deflector. If an improper working position closer than the minimum spacing distance is detected, the arrangement produces a signal that influences, e.g. stops, the motion of the mounting head. The arrangement preferably includes a contact member of a comparatively soft low-friction material at a working end of the bead deflector. If the contact member contacts the wheel rim, this actuates a piezoelectric element to generate the required electrical signal.

    • A method and apparatus for bead setting and inflating tubeless tires on a vehicle wheel is provided. The apparatus for seating a loosely mounted tire ont he rim of the wheel comprises a compressed air tank, a support for the tank including rim engaging saddles slidably mounted on arms which ae releasably connected to the support body. Air from the tank passes out through a fast acting valve to an exhaust manifold to flexible lines and to nozzles mounted on the saddles to ensure the air is directed at the most efficient angle to the inside of the tire to expand it and force a seating of the beads. A main compressed air tank is used in conjunction with the bead seating air tank to supply air thereto and to simultaneously and subsequently supply air to the tire through a conventional tire stem to inflate the tire to the desired level.

    • An apparatus is provided for mounting on a wheel rim a deflated run-flat type tire which has been loosely preassembled on the wheel. The apparatus includes a wheel support for accommodating the preassembled tire and wheel and retaining same in a horizontal plane. A locking member coacts with the wheel support and locks the preassembled tire and wheel in the horizontal plane. An upright post is fixed a predetermined radial distance from the wheel support and is radially spaced from the periphery of the accommodated tire and wheel. A clamp device is mounted for vertical and transverse adjustment on the upright post and is adapted to clamp a segment of the beaded inner edge of the tire sidewall against a portion of a flange formed on the rim of the accommodated wheel. An installer unit is mounted at a selected elevated position relative to the accommodated tire and wheel and is adapted to be manually rotated intermittently about the axis of the accommodated wheel. The unit includes a radially extending arm having a roller piece pivotally connected ot a distal end of the arm. The roller piece is manually adjustable between operative and inoperative modes. When in the inoperative mode the roller piece rests upon a portion of the exposed surface of one sidewall of the preassembled tire, and, when in the operative mode, the roller piece pivots downwardly and inwardly toward the wheel axis causing the engaged sidewall portion to be distorted and the beaded inner edge thereof to fold over and engage the underside of a portion of the wheel rim flange.
