    • In exemplary implementations of this invention, a computer-assisted, handheld machining tool allows even an inexperienced user to carve a complex 3D object, while maintaining artistic freedom to modify the sculpture from an initial CAD design. The tool prevents the user from unintentionally removing material from a volume defined by the CAD design. It does so by slowing or halting spindle rotation as the bit approaches or penetrates the protected volume. The user can override this protective feature. The tool may operate in at least three interaction modes: (i) a static mode in which a static CAD model is used, where the computer assists by preventing the user from damaging the static model; (ii) a dynamic mode where the computer dynamically modifies the CAD model during the sculpting process; and (iii) an autonomous mode where the computer can operate independently of the user, for tasks such as semi-automatic texture rendering.

    • An engraving machine includes a base with two side panels extending upward from two sides of the base, and a top board is driven horizontally by a motor in the base. A horizontal frame is movably mounted on two rods connected between the two side panels by a motor. A vertical frame is located on a front side of the horizontal frame and is movable along two rods in vertical direction by another motor. The horizontal frame, the vertical frame and the top board are movable along X, Y and Z directions by three independent motors. A chuck is connected to the vertical frame and secures an engraving tool which is driven by a main motor connected between the two side panels. The object to be engraved is secured on the top board and engraved by the engraving tool in X, Y and Z directions.

    • A universal cylinder mount for mounting at least one a plurality of cylinders between a headstock and a tailstock of an engraver. Each of the cylinders has a mounting aperture at each end adapted to receive a universal cylinder mount associated with each of the headstock and tailstock. The universal cylinder mount is adapted to accommodate a plurality of mounting apertures formed with different sized and having various sloped walls for facilitating alignment and frictional gripping engagement of the cylinders. The universal cylinder mount comprises at least one helically-shaped spiral or engaging edge to facilitate reducing or completely eliminating the seizing action between the cylinder aperture and the universal cylinder mount of the cylinder when the mounts are rotated in a non-engraving direction or are moved away from the mounting surfaces.
