    • Composer method and apparatus are disclosed in which human readable representations of characters are typed on the first part of a page and are thereafter typed on a second part of the page in the machine readable form. Key stroke signals generated by the typewriter keyboard are stored in a memory prior to being applied to access corresponding type ball positioning signals within a table to print the characters using a conventional type ball on the first portion of the page. Thereafter, the conventional type ball is replaced by a special type ball and the key stroke signals stored in the memory are used to access corresponding ones of a different set of type ball positioning signals within a second memory to enable the special type ball to type optically readable binary coded representations of the characters on the second part of the page. Each character is represented by a string of seven bits plus a parity bit which are typed using either a single strike of a group of eight bits on the special type ball or two different strikes using two different groups of four bits on the special type ball.

    • Apparatus for attachment to a standard typewriter for selectively actuating one or more of a plurality of magnetically actuated switches in electrical circuits that are connected to recording means through an electrical matrix circuit. A switch and actuating lever are provided for each of the unique keys of the typewriter so that signals identifying the corresponding character or function can be produced. The apparatus is compact and can be easily installed beneath the keyboard under the typewrter. Pivotable actuating levers having magnets thereon move into close proximity to the magnetically actuated switches in response to striking of the typewriter keys. The apparatus also includes magnetic shielding for preventing a lever from actuating more than one switch, even though the switches can be in extremely close proximity to one another.

    • A typewrite assembly and attachment for typewriters of the kind having a single rotary printing element for simultaneously deriving encoded output electric signals representative of the characters being printed out by the typewriter in addition to the hard copy print-out normally provided by such typewriters. The typewriter assembly and/or attachment comprises encoding means in the form of alternate light reflecting and non-or-minimallyreflecting stripes secured to a member which is operatively driven synchronously with the single rotary printing element of the typewriter for charactristically encoding each individual character imprinting movement of the single rotary printing element. Sensing means in the form of a fibre optic bundle operatively senses the characteristically encoded movements of the single rotary printing element and supplies pulsed light signals to a photo-electric converter for deriving serially encoded output electric signals representative of the characters being printed out by the typewriter. The encoding arrangement may be such that alternate light reflecting and non-or-minimallyreflecting stripes are formed on the single rotary element or may be attached to the drive cables or formed on the pulley wheels for the drive cables used in rotating the single printing element around two mutually orthogonal axes of rotation. Alternative sensor arrangements may employ capacitive, magnetic or inductive sensors for the markers formed on the single rotary printing element. Auxiliary signal generator equipment in the form of a line spacing signal generator, start of paragraph signal generator, etc are provided for use with the typewriter to enhance data handling capabilities of the overall system in which the typewriter is used.

    • A keyboard-actuated apparatus is described for deriving coded electrical output signals characteristic of the individual characters and markings represented by the several keys of a keyboard-actuated apparatus such as a conventional typewriter. The typewriter is of the kind having a plurality of key-actuated printing hammers that are selectively physically moved to a common printing position during operation, and a single sensing device is located adjacent the common printing position for reading-out respective characteristic marking targets secured to or formed on the printing hammers as the hammers are selectively moved past the sensing device to the common printing position. The sensing device then derives output coded electric signals which are characteristic of the individual characters and markings represented by the keys of the typewriter. By this arrangement, simultaneous printing and encoding of electric output signals, can be achieved. The characteristic marking targets on the respective key-actuated printing hammers preferably include at least two sets of markers representative of upper case and lower case alphabetic letters which are selectively interposed into coacting relationship with the sensing device by the capitalization control of the typewriter. The sensing device may comprise an electro-optic fibre transmitting bundle.
