    • In the print apparatus of this invention, a ruled line is formed on a print medium as a line-up of lines printed by plural printing operation with a line type. A carriage on which the printing unit including the line type is installed is moved from the position where the end of the ruled line composing the outline of a table, is located toward the center of the table at a half print pitch of maximum print pitch, irrespective of the print pitch set by an operator, when the edge of the ruled line is printed. And the ruled line is printed on the print medium by the operation of the printing unit. Moreover, when the middle size of type which can be used corresponding to various print pitches is installed on the carriage, the ruled line can be printed not to protrude from ruled line composing the outline contacting with this ruled line whatever print pitches are set.

    • In a printer system in which hammers mounted along a shuttle assembly which reciprocates relative to a print paper are selectively energized to impact the paper and print dots thereon, the dot density is made variable by an encoder system responsive to the position of the shuttle assembly as it traverses a linear path of motion. The encoder system includes a decoder for generating a succession of fence post pulses as the shuttle assembly reaches each of a succession of different positions along the linear path of motion and circuitry for generating a succession of hammer firing pulses in response to and having a desired phase relationship with the fence post pulses. The hammer firing pulses may occur at a frequency the same as or different from the frequency of the fence post pulses to provide a desired print density. A stored initial offset value is used to initially establish the desired phase relationship between the hammer firing pulses and the fence post pulses. Thereafter, a stored pulse interval value is used to generate the hammer firing pulses at the desired frequency. The desired phase relationship is maintained by measuring the time distance between selected ones of the hammer firing pulses and the preceding fence post pulses, comparing the measured time interval with a stored value representing the desired offset and applying any difference as an error signal to alter the time interval between the immediately following pair of hammer firing pulses.

    • A control circuit for use in conjunction with dot matrix printers which includes a command word gate which is connected to a data source to receive data signals, the command word gate generating a control circuit enabling signal in response to reception of a predetermined coded command word signal from the data source. A density latch gate is connected to the data source to receive density code signals and to the command word gate and generates a density code output signal in response to reception of the command word signal and density code signals received from the data source. Connected to the density latch gate is a printer signal generating circuit with produces an output signal having a frequency proportional to the density code signal. This signal is applied to a dot matrix printer to vary the ratio of the lateral velocity of the printing head of a printer and the printing frequency of the printing hammers thereof to thereby selectively alter the horizontal dimension of alphanumeric characters produced by the printer.

    • A printing element (90) which is rotatable to different positions to print characters having different widths is carried by a carriage (98). The width of each character is divided into a leading width portion and a trailing width portion which are oriented leftwardly and rightwardly respectively of a centerline of the character. For printing a present or next character, the trailing width portion of a previous character is added to the leading width portion of the present character and the carriage (98) is shifted by a shift width which is equal thereto. The character is printed following the shift operation. For printing a character at the beginning of a line or following a blank space, the carriage (98) is shifted only by the leading width portion of the present character prior to printing.
