摘要： In a photocomposition machine, a method for projecting characters at a selected point size. A first reference position and a second reference position are defined. The variator lens and the collimator lens of the machine are driven to the first and second reference positions, respectively, in predetermined directions. The variator lens is then driven from the first reference position to a first composing position, and the collimator lens is driven from the second reference position to a second composing position. The composing positions are determined by the point size data, and each lens is moved to a composition position only in a direction opposite the predetermined direction.

摘要： Some photocomposition machines use optics with a variable magnification lens, usually referred to as a variator lens. Because larger size print requires more lumens of power for proper exposure of the photosensitive sheets used in photocomposition machines, the common practice is to employ an iris diaphragm which is coordinated with the size of the projected image. The ratio of the diaphragm opening to the focal length is referred to as the f-number.The invention shows an improved cam operated iris control wherein the cam-to-follower pressure angle is maintained at a minimum and provides a means for enabling the cam follower to traverse the entire cam without binding as the cam follower carriage is moved relative to the driving cam.

摘要： A method of using photocomposition technology to insure all characters falling on a common text base line when multiple lenses are used to change point size in a line of text. Each lens is tested by deliberately setting the flash circuit to be armed by its dedicated timing mark to flash before the character is properly aligned with the optical system. Then from a memory record produced by a previous test program, the flash is delayed by the count in memory. Therefore, the mechanical positioning of a plurality of lenses in a turret may be only reasonably accurate, and not be responsible for misplacing characters off of the text base line when lenses are intermixed during composition of that base line of text.

摘要： A non-impact printer adapted for on-line or off-line use with digital computers, combines a xerographic processor with an optical character generator, the latter having a continuously rotating character drum sectored into a predetermined number of character groups with a series of flash lamps operative to print out computer generated line copy. The character drum is operatively coupled with the photosensitive surface of the xerographic processor by a lens strip and mask assembly displaceable in predetermined steps corresponding to the character drum sectors. Stepping of the lens strip and mask assembly is effected when there is a lag in starting printout of the first line equal to one drum sector or more, such stepping movement of the lens strip and mask assembly resulting in incremental corrective displacement in the position of the character image generated by the character generator on the processor photosensitive surface.
