    • 923,191. Box making machines. ATLAS GENERAL INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 1, 1960 [Sept. 1, 1959], No. 30137/60. Class 18. A box is formed by forcing a blank 11 through a die by a plunger 33 which holds up side 16 before side 12 which has a flap 20 which is folded back against the side 16 so that a locking tab 22 thereon can be forced through a slot 24 in an extension of the side 16 by a finger 56 which moves horizontally inward relative to the plunger by following the downward motion of the plunger. The flap 20 which may be connected to both adjacent sides is creased at 21 and by downward movement is folded over by contact with the sloping face 52. In detail, as the plunger continues on its downward stroke a projection on the plunger drive contacts the stub 50, Fig. 12, which operates the push-rods 69 to actuate the guide bar 54, causing the tucker fingers 56 to move downward and inward, this motion being constrained by the machined recesses 53. The end faces 57 of the tucker fingers remain substantially parallel to the face of the plunger 33 as they move directly inward relative to the plunger 33 and box. The bottom limit of the plunger 33 movement coincides with the limit of the inward movement of the tucker fingers 56; the return motion of the plunger 33 and the tucking apparatus is an exact reversal of the box forming portion of the cycle. After the tucker fingers have withdrawn from the H slots 24 in dust flaps 27, 28, of the sides 16, 17, these dust flaps abut a stripper which prevents the box from following the plunger 33 further. When the plunger 33 has finally withdrawn from the now stationary box, it drops from the open bottom of the die on to a conveyer Blanks may be fed to the machine by means of a feeder mechanism such as that described in Specification 785,183.
