    • A slicing machine includes a rotatable blade (1) and a feeding device (4, 5) for feeding blocks of product (46) towards the blade (1). The feeding device comprises opposed driven endless track assemblies (4, 5) having their adjacent faces arranged to be driven in the same direction. One of the opposed track assemblies (4) is formed by a number of separate side-by-side endless tracks (6, 7, 8, 9) which are pivotally connected to a common support (20). The number of separate tracks (6, 7, 8, 9) have a ganged drive and pneumatic rams (22) which, in use, urge the downstream ends of the tracks independently towards the block of product (46) so that the separate tracks pivot independently and hold a block of product (46) the thickness of which is not uniform in the transverse direction. The support (20) supports the upstream ends of the endless tracks (6, 7, 8, 9) and is slideably mounted for movement in a direction parallel to the plane of the blade (1). A pneumatic actuator (21) is provided to urge the support (20) towards the other endless track assembly (5) to accommodate differences in thickness between subsequent blocks of product (46).

    • A method and an apparatus for continuously processing and packing elongated articles such as coherent pairs of chopsticks include continuously advancing the articles in the longitudinal direction in a track and centrally aligning the same during the continued advancement. The alignment is performed during the processing by means of one or more processing implements by means of uniform centering rolls operating from their respective sides of the plane of symmetry of the articles. These centering rolls are biased by a uniform spring tension. Subsequently the articles are continuously advanced in the transverse direction by means of transverse conveyor means to a bundling device. In the bundling device the articles are situated in layers and collected in a bundle of articles subsequently wrapped in a sheet material in a wrapping device.

    • An apparatus for producing thin boards by chipless cutting of the boards from a log or a squared timber on one or both opposing sides of the timber where the apparatus includes a support means for the article being cut and a cutter station which is arranged in at least one side of the support and including a cutter blade engageable with the squared timber. A pressure applying means is located on the other side of the squared timber opposite from the cutter station to urge the squared timber against the cutter station at an adjustable pressure. A feed system is arranged to move the squared timber toward the cutter blade, and includes at least one pair of feed rollers which are floatingly supported in a direction transverse to the support. The rollers are arranged to adapt to the position of the squared timber developed by the contact pressure at the contact station while maintaining symmetrical clamping forces.

    • A base frame mounts a first gang of saws in a common vertical datum plane and a first wood member conveyor device. A second gang of saws in a common vertical datum plane and a second wood member conveyor device are mounted on a carriage on the base frame for movement toward and away from the first gang of saws and first conveyor device. Each saw in each gang is independently vertically adjustable in its vertical datum plane and each saw is rotatable a full 180 degrees around the axis of a chord on the saw blade lying in the common datum plane of such saw. Each saw, during its angular rotation, is precisely supported on a double pantograph movement linkage which follows an arcuate track centered on said chord and vertical datum plane. A precision drive for the wood member conveyor devices and carriage obviates the necessity for a long torque shaft and enables much greater versatility of operation of the apparatus. A precision automatic wood member measuring device and carriage positioner is provided on the front of the base frame. The range of utility of the apparatus is significantly increased.

    • Strictly translatory substantially lengthwise horizontal motion is imparted to an elongated workpiece such as a cant having top and bottom face surfaces, at least one of which is flat, to feed the workpiece from an orienting station towards a trimming station at which straight, parallel longitudinal side surfaces are formed on the workpiece that are perpendicular to said flat face surface. For such translatory motion, driving dogs engage one face surface at longitudinally spaced portions of a narrow zone thereof which is spaced substantially equal distances from its longitudinal edges; the driving dogs are confined to linear motion in the feed direction; and the other face surface is engaged by horizontal freely revolving rollers extending transversely to the feed direction at intervals therealong. At the orienting station the oriented workpiece is clampwise engaged by the rollers and dogs by effecting relative vertically converging motion between them.
