    • An extrusion die (10) includes a die body (30) having an upstream face (32) and a downstream face (34) with an extrusion profile (22) passing through the body (30) from the upstream face (32) to the downstream face (34). The walls of the extrusion profile (22) being the bearing (46) of the die (10). A pocket (40) having tapered sidewalls (70) is formed in the upstream face (32) of the die (10) and surrounds the extrusion profile (22). The configuration of the pocket (40) improves the material flow through the die (10). The configuration of the pocket (40) depends on the configuration of the extrusion profile (22). The width of the pocket (40) is small at the fast areas of the extrusion profile (22) while being large at the slow areas of the extrusion profile (22). The pocket (40) alters the entry angle of material as it enters the die (10) thus reducing friction in the die (10) and allowing increased extrusion speeds. In conjunction with the pocket (40), the die (10) has a continuous bearing (46) having a length depending on the configuration of the extrusion profile (22).

    • An improved fixed dummy block assembly to be used with a heavy duty metal extrusion assembly including a hydraulic press and a billet container. The assembly includes a stem connected with the press in axial alignment with the billet container so as to be pushed by the press towards an open inlet end of the billet container. Further, the stem, which is generally elongate and includes a first end having an axial socket extending into the stem therethrough, is structured to receive an exterior dummy block member therein within the axial socket. The exterior dummy block member includes an expansion segment and a connector segment, the connector segment being structured to be axially and slidingly inserted into the axial socket of the stem so as to be securely, yet removably locked in place without the use of any threads. The expansion segment of the exterior dummy block member includes an open interior area having a bell head containment portion and a bell stem containment portion into which a compression bell is inserted and secured. The bell itself has a bell head which fits in the bell head containment portion and bell connector stem which extends into the bell stem containment portion and is secured therein in a threadless manner such that the bell head is retained in the bell head containment portion and will protrude slightly from a front end of the expansion segment in order to engage the metal billet first and engage the expansion segment in order to outwardly flex of the surrounding wall structure of the expansion segment.

    • An insert type extrusion die is presented for making small parts for use in electrical, automotive and other industries for manufacturing small component parts. The application of the invented die is illustrated for making multi-cavity flat aluminum tubes, which are used for small heat exchanger components, in automotive air-conditioners, condensors and radiators. The insert die is composed of a male die section having a protrusion part and a female die section having a die cavity is held detachably in a die holder. The male section is a roughly rectangular plate-shaped component, and has an integrally formed twist prevention region which is inserted into the receiver groove of the female section which is integrally formed thereon. The protrusion part defines the cavity shape of the multi-cavity flat tube, and the female section has the die cavity of the required cross sectional shape to define the outer shape of the tube. Because the male section is made as a small independent part, the male section is not only replaceable readily, but the extrusion pressure is low because the port area can be made large compared with the insert dies of the conventional type. The invented insert die is therefore durable and retains the original mechanical precision of a new die during its long service life. The cost of manufacturing the insert die is low because the male section is simple shaped and can be fabricated by such precision fabrication techniques as electric discharge machining.

    • The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for extruding sections from materials, such as aluminium or aluminium alloys, in which material which has been rendered plastic is forced through an extrusion gap formed in a die and in which the extrusion gap is bounded by separate, mutually oppositely situated running surfaces, in which method, as a consequence of the shape and/or length of the running surfaces and/or width of the extrusion gap, the material forced through the extrusion gap experiences a lower resistance at one side of the die than at the other side of the die, more material being forced through the extrusion gap at said one side than at said other side, a curved section being formed as a result of the difference in the amount of material at the one side and at the other side, the longitudinal axis of said section having a curvature with a certain radius. The longitudinally curved section emerging from the die is passed through a curved guide device after leaving the die, the curvature of the guide device essentially matching the curvature of the curved section. After emerging from the die, the section is cooled, after which it is clamped by gripping means and is pulled by the latter in such a way that the rate at which the section is extruded is kept essentially constant.
