    • Radwaste contaminated effluent generated by an underwater source is filtered by a submersible filter system employing cannister shielded filter cartridges. The system has a submersible frame that fixedly mounts a coupling for each filter cannister. Each cannister is internally fitted with a filter cartridge and mounting means configured to divide the cannister to an inlet chamber and a filtrate chamber, the latter having outlet ports for exhausting the filtrate to the pool in which the system is submerged. The inlet chamber is in check valved fluid communication with an external nipple of the cannister detachably connected to a coupling of the frame through which the radwaste effluent is received. One end of an elongate tool and an upper end of the cannister have interconnectable cooperating means for remotely removing and replacing cannisters on the frame. The check valved inlet chamber prevents escape of radwaste from the filter inlet chamber during and after removal of a cannister from the frame.

    • A filtering system for the treatment of radioactive fluids, comprising filters with interchangeable filtering elements, positioned within a casing. The casing has a cover and the filter assembly is housed inside a radiation shielding chamber provided with an access opening. At least one opening is provided in the chamber wall opposite the filter which is closed with a removable filter casing cover. The casing cover is shaped to be received in the shielding chamber opening and when in position seals the casing. The cover is also designed to be received by a shielded cask for the transportation of the said filtering element when the spent element is removed and replaced. The filter element is suspended from the cover and hence is removed from the casing simultaneous with the removal of the cover. In the method according to this invention, removal of spent elements is effected without subjecting personnel to high radiation dosage since the filter elements are shielded at all times during removal.

    • The pumping device comprises a pump driven by a motor having a stator and a permanent-magnet rotor located between polar expansions and connected to an impeller. A liquid suction duct and a liquid delivery duct are connected to the pump to define a hydraulic circuit. A reciprocating vacuum pump, for creating a negative pressure at the suction duct of the pump, has a resilient cylindrical element connected to a rigid cylindrical box-like element and defines therewith a chamber. The chamber has inlet and outlet valves connected to the hydraulic circuit through a poppet valve, and an arm-like member connected to the resilient element. An opposite end of the arm-like member supports a magnet located between poles of the stator of the motor, whereby to cause movement of the arm-like member and the resilient element for circulating fluid through the chamber via the inlet and outlet valves for priming the pump upon actuating the poppet valve.

    • A bottom loaded filter assembly for filtering radioactive liquids through a replaceable cartridge filter. The filter assembly includes a lead-filled jacket enveloping a housing having a chamber therein for the filter cartridge. A track arrangement carries a hatch for sealing the chamber. A spacer plug supports the cartridge within guide means associated with the inlet conduit in the chamber. The plug and cartridge drop out of the chamber when the hatch is unbolted and move laterally of the chamber. During cartridge replacement, a new plug and cartridge are supported in the guide means by a spacer bar inserted across the track means under the chamber. The hatch is then slid under the chamber and bolted to the vessel, engaging an O-ring to seal the chamber.

    • Apparatus is provided for filtering radioactive particles from the cooling and/or auxiliary process water of a nuclear reactor, or nuclear fuel processing plant, or other installations wherein radioactive fluid systems are known to exist. The apparatus affords disposal of the captured particles in a manner which minimizes the exposure of operating personnel to radioactivity. The apparatus comprises a housing adapted to contain a removable filter cartridge assembly, a valve normally closing the lower end of the housing, an upwardly-open shipping cask located below the valve, and an elongated operating rod assembly projecting upwardly from the filter cartridge assembly and through the upper end of the housing to enable a workman to dismount the filter cartridge assembly from its housing and to lower the filter cartridge assembly through the valve and into the cask from a remote location above the housing. The filter cartridge assembly is releasably connected to the operating rod assembly and is capable of being disconnected therefrom when the operating rod assembly is displaced downwardly and rotated after the cartridge is loaded in the cask. The apparatus is surrounded by a mass of concrete to absorb radiation emitted from within the filter housing, and additional structural elements are provided to ensure the safety of operating personnel.

    • Apparatus for filtering radioactive contamination from a contaminated medium by leaching the contamination from the medium into a liquid and removing the radioactivity from solution by passing it through an ion exchange resin. The apparatus includes a container having a base and side wall, a filter cartridge disposable on the base of the container and a basket having a wall through which fluid held in the container flows. The basket is disposable adjacent the cartridge in the container. The cartridge has a central cavity bounded by a first filter wall and a second filter wall spaced outwardly from the first filter wall, with the two filter walls having a selected mesh size to capture the contaminated medium. A first and second barrier extend in spaced relation to one another and between the first and second filter walls to define a filter medium enclosure surrounding the central cavity. A magnetic stirrer is used to induce liquid flow in the container, including flow through the cartridge and basket.
