    • There is provided a power supply system which is capable of eliminating inconvenience affecting a storage device in the event of a power failure. Monitoring control means monitors supply voltage provided by a DC power supply connected to a power-supplied device and outputs a warning signal to transition means when the absolute value of the supply voltage becomes equal to or smaller than a predetermined voltage value. The transition means causes transition of the operative state of a storage device included in the power-supplied device to an operation terminated state. More specifically, if the storage device is a hard disk drive and the hard disk drive is performing write operation, the hard disk drive is caused to undergo operative state transition to a stable state in which the write operation has been terminated. Further, if the storage device is comprised of a working storage unit and a backup one, the operative state transition of the storage device is carried out such that the two storage units have identical data stored therein, followed by inhibiting the operation of the storage device.

    • A power supply system which is designed to control the power supply to, for example, a building-block private branch exchange (PBX) system is provided which includes main and extension cabinets having disposed therein AC power supply units, respectively, and a power supply control circuit. The main and extension cabinets are supplied with AC power from an external power source and provide DC outputs. The power supply control circuit includes a first and a second switching circuit. The first switching circuit allows the supply of AC power to the AC power supply unit of the extension cabinet when the power supply system is turned on and interrupts it when the power supply system is turned off. The second switching circuit establishes communication between the AC power supply unit of the extension cabinet and a backup battery when the power supply system is turned on and blocks it when the power supply system is turned off.

    • A telephone line circuit for supplying energizing current to a telephone line and for providing a voice frequency connection between the telephone line and an associated switching facility includes a transformer having a split primary winding, consisting of n turns, for connection across the telephone line and for connection to a power supply or battery. A first current flows in the split primary winding in proportion to the telephone line load characteristic. A balance winding in the transformer is connected in series with one portion of the split primary winding. The balance winding is counter-wound relative to the split primary winding and consists of more than n turns. A circuit including a current regulator causes sufficient balance current to flow in the balance winding to substantially cancel the d-c flux associated with direct current in the split primary winding. The first and balance currents additively combine to produce the energizing current for the telephone line, whereby the load on the power supply is no greater than that of a conventional line circuit in spite of the balance current requirement.

    • A semiconductor interface circuit and method of operation for transmitting and receiving information between a telephone set and a four wire switching system. The interface circuit includes DC current sources which may be modulated by a voice signal from the switching system. The current sources provide both DC power and the voice signal to the telephone set through a two wire cable. A high impedance amplifier amplifies the signal on the cable, which cable signal includes a DC voltage, a microphone signal from the telephone set, and a component due to the voice signal from the switching system, all three being dependent on the cable length. Cable termination resistors are optional. The signal from the switching system and the DC component of the output signal of the amplifier are multiplied by an inverting multiplier circuit. The output signal of the multiplier circuit is proportional to cable length and is utilized to cancel the amplifier output signal component which is related to the voice signal from the switching system. Thus, echo return is eliminated or minimized regardless of cable length. Differential optical coupling circuits are utilized to couple the signal from the switching system to the cable and to couple the cable signal to the switching system relatively independently of the efficiency of the light emitting diodes of the differential optical coupling circuits. A DC ring insertion signal is coupled from the switching system to an output of the interface circuit via one of the differential optical coupling circuits. Status signals from the telephone set are conducted via another of the differential optical coupling circuits. The semiconductor interface circuit is housed in a package having two optically isolated cavities therein.
