    • A method for processing data packets received at a computing system is provided. The method includes receiving a data packet and processing lower layer protocol headers of the data packet to expose overlying headers of the data packet. The overlying headers in a shared hardware component capable of executing header data for a transmission control protocol (TCP) communication and a storage transport protocol (STP) communication are processed. The header data for the TCP communication and the STP communication are positioned into standard header field locations. It is determined whether the data packet is from the TCP communication or the STP communication. If the data packet is from the TCP communication the processing of the overlying headers of the data packet separately in TCP processing is completed. If the data packet is from the STP communication, the processing of the overlying headers of the data packet separately in STP processing is completed.

    • In a packet distributing apparatus and a packet distributing method which, in a situation in which a link can be allocated to a specific user or a specific traffic with priority, can effectively utilize any unoccupied link, a packet inputted via first through Nth the input interface circuits 2031 through 203N is provided by a transfer destination searching unit 205 with a transfer destination port and a transfer-admissible port. Then usage detecting units 2111 through 211N check the usage of a transfer-admissible port matching the pertinent one of first through Nth output buffer units 2091 through 209N, and distribute the packet to a transfer-admissible port bearing a less load than a prescribed level (less loaded transfer-admissible port), such as an unloaded port. If there is no such less loaded transfer-admissible port, the packet is distributed to the transfer destination port for which it is destined in its own right. This arrangement makes it possible to utilize unoccupied ports and thereby to effectively utilize the links.

    • A system is disclosed which can measure and control the absolute phase angles of individual coherent Frequency-Division-Multiplexed (FDM) carriers which have been combined to form a composite signal. User-specified phase relationships for the carriers are predetermined to produce an optimum peak factor (peak power to average power ratio) of the composite signal for a given application. In the preferred embodiment, phase relationships chosen to minimize peak factor can dramatically reduce the presence of intermodulation distortion products which can be detrimental to present communication architectures, such as Community Antenna Television (CATV). As CATV providers move toward using fiber-optic transmission networks for support of larger customer bases and inclusion of digital channels, there is a greater risk for rising signal amplitudes to induce clipping of CATV laser transmitters, thereby creating distortion which degrades analog picture quality and causes digital transmission errors to exceed maximum thresholds. Higher peak factors may be desirable, however, when testing individual components including CATV amplifiers, or subsystems such as linear fiber-optic transmission equipment, in order to more accurately characterize field performance. The disclosed invention uses a combination of RF, baseband, and digital techniques to repeatedly acquire and maintain desired peak factor conditions within coherent FDM systems.

    • A multiport network device includes output port logic, priority logic, a memory, and memory logic. The output port logic generates output port data that identifies output ports to transmit received packets. The priority logic generates priority data that identifies priorities of the received packets. The memory stores the output port data from the output port logic and the priority data from the priority logic. The memory logic receives priority data relating to one of the received packets from the output port logic, determines whether the memory stores output port data relating to the packet, ignores the received priority data when the memory stores no output port data relating to the packet, and when the memory stores output port data relating to the packet, transmits the received priority data and the stored output port data to the identified output port.
