    • A radio receiver having RF, frequency converter, demodulator and audio stages, in which the frequency converter stage is connected to a local oscillator composed of a phase locked loop. The radio receiver includes a variable frequency divider inserted into the phase locked loop, a memory circuit for variably controlling the frequency dividing ratio of the frequency divider in accordance with a signal to be received, a scanning counter for supplying a read-out control signal to the memory circuit, a clock signal source for generating a clock signal, a counter control circuit for controlling supply and supply-terminating of the clock signal fed to the scanning counter, a level detecting circuit for detecting if a signal supplied to the RF stage has a level higher than a predetermined level, a switching circuit for switching a received channel, and a circuit for cutting off the clock signal fed to the scanning counter when outputs of the switching circuit and level detecting circuit are fed thereto.

    • A channel selection apparatus of the scanning tuning type in which a tuning frequency is swept by a sweeping voltage to select a given tuning frequency. The sweep of the frequency is controlled for each channel by a control signal stored for each channel in the form of a number of pulses to attain exact instant tuning to a specified channel. An operating unit which compensates for temperature drift of the elements comprising the apparatus is provided to correctly compensate for temperature drift of these elements thereby attaining exact tuning.

    • A tuner bandswitching system for a television receiver tuning system wherein a reset pulse generated at the completion of the selection of a channel to be received is utilized to determine the initial stable state of a series of bistable circuits and to provide a bandswitch reset pulse for use in establishing an initial voltage output from a voltage sweep generator utilized to scan a varactor tuned VHF tuner or a varactor tuner through one or more bands of frequencies. The bistable circuits control switching voltages supplied to the VHF tuner and the UHF tuner to provide for sequencing of the tuning system serially through, for example, the low VHF band, the high VHF band, and the UHF band until the appropriate band has been selected wherein the selected channel can be tuned. When the selected channel is tuned, a hold signal is developed. Data identifying the channel being received during a sweep through a given band is accumulated in a counter. At a predetermined output of the counter (e.g., "06" or "13") in the absence of the hold signal, the state of the bistable circuits is changed. As the state of a bistable circuit is changed, a bandswitch reset pulse is provided to again reset the voltage sweep generator in preparation for the scanning of the next band in the aforementioned sequence of bands.

    • A digital tuning controller is provided which utilizes the storage of codes relating to the location and bandwidth of unused or illegal frequency bands to control a frequency acquisition operation with minimum circuitry.A two digit keyboard entry corresponding to a selected channel number is stored. First counter means indicates a current channel location. Second counter means counts regularly spaced frequency markers produced as the band is scanned to increment the first counter. A comparator signals coincidence between the content of the first counter and the keyboard entry. A third counter counts the frequency markers for comparison with the current output state of a read only memory (ROM) having stored codes corresponding to the location and bandwidth of the unused frequency bands. Upon coincidence, the third counter is reset, the second counter is inhibited and the next succeeding location of the ROM is addressed to provide an output state indicating the bandwidth of the skip band. Upon coincidence again occurring between the ROM and the third counter, the second counter is activated to resume counting and the tuning operation continues until either another skip band is reached or the selected channel is acquired.
