    • The invention provides a digital data shuffling/de-shuffling system so that information data is not understood or deciphered by unauthorized third party. Included are a system for generating plural bits of digital data to be transmitted, a circuit network 7 having a plurality of input terminals #1 through #8 and output terminals #11 through #18 equal to the number of bits to be transmitted and a plurality of switching circuits S for selectively cross connecting or non-cross connecting between two lines out of a plurality of transmission lines a.sub.1 through a.sub.8 interconnecting the corresponding input and output terminals, and a control circuit P for controlling the plurality of switching circuits S. The control circuit P is controlled to shuffle the data applied to the input terminals #1 through #8 for providing the shuffled output from the output terminals #11 through #18.

    • An image coding apparatus wherein coding processing is performed efficiently and the generated code amount is controlled to a substantially fixed level is disclosed. The image coding apparatus comprises a setting circuit for setting a coding parameter, a coding circuit for coding input image data using the coding parameter, a code amount measurement circuit for measuring the amount of codes generated by the coding circuit, an aimed code amount setting circuit for setting an aimed code amount, a calculation circuit for calculating a code amount difference between the aimed code amount and the generated code amount, and a coding parameter control apparatus for controlling the coding parameter of the setting circuit in accordance with the code amount difference such that the setting circuit first sets an initial value as the coding parameter and then sets, in accordance with the code amount difference calculated from the amount of codes newly generated using the initial value, another value as the coding parameter to be used for next coding for the same image data.

    • Encryption and decryption of information of a message is performed by partitioning a plaintext message into blocks of binary digits and by further partitioning said blocks into subblocks which are interpreted as elements in a Galois-field. A plaintext matrix (M) of said elements is multiplied by a first key matrix (A) of a group over said Galois-field, the resulting product M.multidot.A) being multiplied by a second key matrix (B) of the same group over said Galois-field. The final product (B.multidot.M.multidot.A) thus received constitutes the encrypted message block (K). Decryption is performed by multiplying the transmitted product (B.multidot.M.multidot.A) by inverse key matrices (A.sup.-1, B.sup.-1) generated by the same keys (a, b) as used for decryption and taken in the proper order.     • The specification discloses a portable cryptographic device, adapted to be hand-held through solid state electronics, which possesses the capability for enciphering and deciphering plain text. The housing of the device has a keyboard for the input of plain text or cipher text, including numeric characters and control signals and, further, has a display for displaying the inputs. Circuitry within the device is responsive to the inputs and controls the display. Additional circuitry enciphers or deciphers the inputs and substitutes the resulting text into the display.The device incorporates a random code generator for generating a randomized message key which, together with the keyboard inputs, initiates and generates a long sequence of randomized letters for enciphering purposes. In a deciphering mode, a predetermined message key may be entered to set the random code generator at a point to generate the originally entered plain text. Also, a basic key composed of multiple segments fully initializes the random code generator such that more than one device could be used to encipher and decipher text. Similarly, by using different segments of the basic key, varying levels of security can be obtained.Test circuitry is also provided to insure maintenance of the proper key variables and proper operation of the device.
