    • A modular articulated light curtain is formed by combining straight, curved, or angled modules with straight or angled couplers. Modules include an array of pitched light emitters or light detectors, and have rounded distal ends that mate, mechanically and electrically, with each other or with a coupler. Interconnection of adjacent modules is such that a constant pitch of light emitters or light detectors is maintained. The light curtain comprises an assembly of interconnected light emitting modules spaced-apart from interconnected light detecting modules. One end of each assembly is terminated, while the other assembly end has a cable end module that may include at least one light emitter or detector, and may include a visual indicator, and provides input/output electrical interface to the light curtain.

    • A vibratory conveying feeder, which includes a power control circuit for locally providing an adjusted drive signal to the vibratory drive. Inclusion of a power control circuit into one or more vibratory conveying feeders within a system including multiple vibratory conveying feeders, enable the feeders to share a common power supply bus. By enabling multiple feeders to share a common power supply bus, the wiring associated with providing power connections to the multiple vibratory conveying feeders is correspondingly reduced. Consequently, initial system installation or system reconfiguration is greatly simplified.

    • The invention relates to a method for inspecting cigarette heads (25, 41, 61), where light radiates in at least two strip-like portions (26-31), which are incident from different directions, onto the end area (39, 42) of a cigarette head (25, 41, 61) and light (33) reflected from the end area (39, 42) is received by a detector (32) and evaluated. Known methods of this type have the disadvantage that they are inaccurate and do not allow exact statements to be made about the state of cigarettes. Therefore, the invention is based on the problem of improving the inspection of cigarettes. This problem is solved by virtue of the fact that, in the course of evaluation, a distance (B, C) between two lines (54, 55, 68, 69) which are produced from a signal generated by the detector (32) and correspond to the strip-shaped portions (26-31) is determined in order to establish the position of that region of the cigarette head (25, 41, 61) which is irradiated by the portions (26-31). Furthermore, the invention relates to a corresponding apparatus.

    • A proximity detection apparatus for detecting objects within a predetermined space. The apparatus comprises a transmitter, a receiver, a processor, and a power supply that provides electrical potential to the transmitter, the receiver, and the processor. The processor produces transmitted data bursts to the transmitter, the transmitter emits optical data bursts toward the predetermined space where, if the object is present, the optical data bursts reflect off of the object as return optical bursts. The receiver detects the return optical bursts and transmits received data bursts to the processor. The processor compares the received data bursts against the transmitted data bursts to verify that the object is present in the predetermined space. The processor produces an output signal to control equipment based the object being present or absent from the predetermined space. A dispensing system embodiment may include a portion control device.

    • A manually operable switch apparatus for a machine having at least one mode of operation actuated by a control circuit includes a spaced pair of switches which are simultaneously manually operable without the application of exertive contact by an operator. Preferably, each switch includes an infrared emitter spaced from an infrared receiver, and a single or double pole, double throw relay actuated when the beam between the emitter and receivers are broken, so as to cause actuation of an alternative mode of machine operation. The use of switches which do not require exertive contact obviates the injury to wrist and finger tendons experienced by machine operators when conventional palm buttons are employed on machines requiring repetitive operator manipulations. The use of a spaced pair of such switches requires that the operator place both hands on the switches in order to operate the machine, so that the operator cannot inadvertently place a hand in or adjacent to the machine during operation, thus serving to prevent injury to the worker. Such a switch apparatus is substantially more reliable then conventional mechanical and pneumatic switches, subject to significantly less breakdown in use.
