    • An improved sheathed fever thermometer and method of preparing the same wherein the thermometer structure, fabricated from glass, is encapsulated within a contoured sheath. The sheath is provided with a tapered wall thickness which increases from the bulb end to the tip end, with the tip end having a gripping tab which enables the user to grasp the tab for achieving enhanced motion for shaking down the conventional mercury column. In the method of preparing the sheath, an improved mandrel is provided which permits the formation of a sheath having a wall thickness which tapers from the outer tip end to the bulb end. The application of a small quantity of water to the contacting surface between the mandrel and the sheath enhances the release of the individual mandrel fingers from the sheath structure. A vinyl plastisol has been found to be preferred for the sheath fabrication material.

    • In making a gas pressure thermometer measuring system comprising a container for the gas, a Bourdon tube, and a capillary of no more than about 20 m which connects said container to one end of the Bourdon tube is filled with the gas to a superatmospheric pressure prevailing at the ambient temperature. The system is hermetically sealed and the free end of the Bourdon tube is connected to a temperature indicator or recorder through a transmission mechanism. According to the method of the invention, a Bourdon tube is used which has a long overall spring movement of at least 22 mm and an effective spring movement of about 11 mm, the measuring system is filled with the gas to a pressure, prevailing at ambient temperature, of at least about 5 bar, and the non-linear indication occurring as the Bourdon tube is uncoiled is compensated for by adjusting angles .alpha. and .beta.. Preferably, with the effective spring excursion of the Bourdon tube of about 11 mm a spring excursion of about 40-22 mm is selected, and the transmission mechanism preferably has a factor of magnification of no more than about 1:8.5.

    • The underwater thermometer includes a transparent block, preferably formed of an acrylic plastic, having a planar rear surface provided with a longitudinal recess adapted to receive a fluid and tube type temperature indicator, with an enlargement at one end of the recess for receiving the bulb of the indicator. The indicator is adhesively attached to a foam pad, in turn adhesively secured to a flat, transparent layer, corresponding in shape to the planar rear surface of the block and adhered by a transparent adhesive, preferably an acrylic adhesive, to the rear surface of the block. The transparent layer is also provided, on its rear side, with one or more temperature scales and other indicia printed in reverse and visible through the transparent block, at least a portion of the front of which, such as the portion overlying the recess, is parallel to the planar rear surface. A second layer, preferably formed of a polyester plastic, but opaque, is adhered, as by an acrylic adhesive, to the rear side of the transparent layer. The transparent layer is adhered to the rear of the block by pressure, such as exerted by a roller, which squeezes out all air bubbles from the adhesive, the adhesive layer being thereby reduced to a thickness on the order of 0.001 inch. The opaque layer is similarly secured by adhesive and squeezing to the rear of the transparent layer. Each of the block and transparent and opaque layers may be provided at one end with a hole through which a cord is looped, for attachment of the underwater thermometer to the wrist or other portion of equipment of the user.
