    • A stemming plug (60) for stemming a blast hole in a mine is disclosed. The plug has first and second wedge-shaped members (62′, 62) manufactured from a suitable plastics material. The first wedge-shaped member (62′) has a first sloping face received in sliding relationship with a matching face of the second wedge-shaped member (62) wherein, in use, when the first wedge-shaped member (62′) is positioned nearest to an explosive material in the blast hole it has a larger surface area facing the explosive material than the second wedge-shaped member (62). In use, when a Shockwave from initiation of the explosive material in the blast hole encounters the first wedge-shaped member (62′) it acts as a piston, sliding on the second wedge-shaped member (62) so that both wedge-shaped members exert diametrically opposed forces against the wall of the blast hole to lock the plug (60) in place. The two wedge-shaped members (62′, 62) may be substantially identical, thus significantly simplifying the manufacturing process.

    • A stemming plug (10) for stemming a blast hole in a mine, the plug (10) comprising an active wedge-shaped member (12) having a sloping face received in sliding relationship with a matching face of a passive wedge-shaped member (14). In use, the active wedge-shaped member (12) is positioned nearest to an explosive material in the blast hole and the passive wedge-shaped member (14) is positioned further from the explosive material in the blast hole. The active wedge-shaped member (12) has a friction reducing material provided on at least part of its surface to reduce the sliding resistance of the active wedge-shaped member (12) relative to the passive wedge-shaped member (14); whereby, in use, when a shockwave from initiation of the explosive material in the blast hole encounters the active wedge-shaped member (12) it acts as a piston, sliding on the passive wedge-shaped member (14) so that both wedge-shaped members exert diametrically opposed forces against a wall of the blast hole and are locked in place.

    • An inexpensive bullet-shaped plug is shown for use in a blasting hole containing water in the bottom thereof, which plug permits dry powder to be used above the waterline rather than more expensive wet powder. After the blasting holes are drilled, if water accumulates in the bottom thereof, the bullet-shaped plug with a center weight is dropped into the hole, which bullet-shaped plug floats on the water. Small rocks are dropped on top of the bullet-shaped plug causing upper tentacles to flare out to engage the wall of the blasting hole. Dry powder is then loaded into the blasting hole on top of the bullet-shaped plug. A cap is inserted a distance below the surface of the blasting hole. Thereafter, a series of similar blasting holes are blown at one time to create debris that can be removed or further processed.

    • A mine shaft closure plug which is created by a self-expanding plastic foam on a platform positioned within the mine shaft. Multiple expansion foam containers are used to provide the foam. Each expansion foam container has two closed waterproof pouches, an inner pouch and an outer pouch, each containing a separate component of the foam. The inner pouch is contained within the outer pouch. Upon breaking the inner pouch, the separate foam components combine within the outer pouch to form a complete expansion foam. The foam expands slowly enough to provide sufficient time for the container to be placed on the platform. Once in position, the expansion foam bursts the outer pouch to form the expansion foam plug above the platform. Either the platform or the expansion foam containers may be lowered into place by attached tethers.

    • Inflatable devices configured for use particularly in large diameter boreholes and in blasting applications such as vertical cratering, the invention finds utility in blast removal of earth formations wherein the inflatable devices act to suspend explosives and/or stemming materials and the like within a borehole prior to detonation of explosives within said borehole. The inflatable devices are of various shapes and comprise an inner, relatively stretchable inflatable bag enclosed by an outer, relatively non-resilient bag, the inner bag having a valve to allow a fluid such as air to be pumped thereinto with the inner bag expanding to contact inner walls of the outer bag and force the outer bag into contact with walls of the borehole to exert forces against the borehole walls and thus "plug" the borehole at a desired location along the length thereof. Explosive materials and/or stemming materials can thus be suspended at desired locations within the borehole.
