    • A flow conditioner for a steam turbine inlet includes an annular ring adapted to seat in a flange portion of an inlet in a turbine casing and a pair of wing portions extending from the annular ring in a flow direction, away from the annular ring. A related method of smoothing flow through an inlet of a steam turbine inlet casing wherein the inlet includes a circular flange and a non-circular transition portion extending between the annular flange and a main body portion of the steam turbine casing includes the steps of a) identifying surface discontinuities that disrupt flow of working fluid through the steam inlet; b) providing a flow conditioner that is shaped to conceal one or more of the surface discontinuities; and c) inserting the flow conditioner into the inlet.

    • Apparatus and method for directing a flow of fluid to a turbine via a nozzle box mountable to encircle a shaft. The nozzle box includes a housing having an inner wall spaced from an outer wall and joined therewith so as to form a chamber therein. The housing also includes at least one inlet and at least one outlet in which each is in fluid flow communication with the chamber. A plurality of radially projecting nozzles are positioned between the inner and outer walls and located upstream of the outlet for directing the flow of fluid through the outlet. A flow distributor is positioned between the inner and outer walls and located upstream of the nozzles for directing the flow of fluid through the chamber and to the nozzles. The flow distributor is configured to obtain a substantially uniform flow of fluid to the nozzles.

    • To reduce the number of stages of a turbine and, associated therewith, the overall length and the costs, blading having high stage-specific enthalpy transfer is to be used. In this case, the disadvantages of conventional highly loaded blading, such as increased secondary flow losses due to blades of large chord length and comparatively small height and the design of the turbine in the complicated chamber type of construction, are to be avoided. Resulting from these requirements is a highly loaded slim blade type of construction having considerable deflection. A turbine having blading according to the invention is characterized by a loading parameter RBL, which in the HRBL blading according to the invention, in contrast to conventional types of construction, is greater than 1.

    • Windage cover plates are secured between the wheels and spacer of a turbine rotor to prevent hot flow path gas ingestion into the wheelspace cavities. Each cover plate includes a linear, axially extending body curved circumferentially with a radially outwardly directed wall at one axial end. The wall defines a axially opening recess for receiving a dovetail lug. The cover plate includes an axially extending tongue received in a circumferential groove of the spacer. The cover plate is secured with the tongue in the groove and dovetail lug in the recess. Lap joints between circumferentially adjacent cover plates are provided.

    • A two stage jointed stationary blade of a high pressure or intermediate pressure steam turbine is formed with a bolt joint in place of a welded joint so as to make detachment and disassembly possible, and thereby facilitating maintenance and inspection work and reducing assembling man-hours. A stationary blade (front stage)(2), outer ring front portion (1) and inner ring front portion (3) are welded into an integral structure. A stationary blade (rear stage) 22, outer ring rear portion (21) and inner ring rear portion (23) are also welded into an integral structure. The outer ring front portion 1, outer ring center portion 10 and the outer ring rear portion 21 are mutually engaged via engaging portions (4, 11 and 12, 24) with precise positioning and then jointed together integrally by bolt (30). The two stage jointed stationary blade can be engaged with moving blades (33, 35), labyrinth seals (32, 34) can be fitted to seal fitting portions (6, 26), and seal fins (31, 34) can be fitted in seal fin grooves (13, 27).
