    • A portion of a street surface to be removed for access to a manhole cover is defined by placing a design mask on the street with a cutout overlying an electronic marker embedded in the street proximate the manhole. The design mask is oriented such that a larger cutout overlies the manhole cover, by aligning the design mask along an established direction. The design mask can be a template with a circular cutout, or a stencil with a ring cutout. When the marker is located proximate a curb line, the established direction may correspond to a normal from the curb line. A rectangular design mask can be oriented by keeping an edge of the design mask which is closest to a curb line parallel with the curb line. Alternatively, a compass heading may be used, and a pointer feature of the design mask can be aligned with the compass heading.

    • An installation head is mounted on a vehicle and moves along and adjacent to a roadway as the vehicle moves along the roadway. The head has a loading station at the bottom of a vertical loading chamber and a slide that slides along a floor to move markers out of the loading station into a setting station. A setting ram forces markers down onto adhesive prepositioned on the roadway. A plurality of heads may be positioned on the vehicle and may form opposite rows for simultaneously installing markers on opposite sides of a traffic lane. An indexed marker that interlocks with adjacent markers to prevent tilting may be used to maximize the reliability of the system. Various types of delivery devices may be used to deliver markers to the loading station. These include a delivery platform or carrousel positioned above the loading chamber to deliver markers down into the loading chamber. They also include a collating tape that delivers markers into the loading chamber through a side opening.

    • An actuator and corresponding base assembly, as well as related systems for applying a mark onto a surface. The actuator has at least one pair of wings which extend from the actuator body, wherein the entire lower edge of each wing curves continuously outwardly and upwardly from the body. The base assembly comprises a base surface at least partially disposed in a base plane and an opening therethrough, at least one wall extending upward from the base surface and defining two actuator-orienting guides, the guides being defined by substantially arcuate-shaped profiles substantially disposed in respective guide planes, the guide planes being disposed at an angle to one another of less than 180.degree. and at an angle of less than 90.degree. to the base plane, the guides being capable of contacting an actuator as it is received in the base assembly and disposed relative to one another such that they rotate an actuator into a seated position in the base. The system comprises an aerosol container having an actuator and a movable marking device comprising the base of the present invention. Another system allows an operator to vary the width of a mark from an initial dimension.
