    • A straight line shear has a pair of carriages which support opposed pairs of shear blade assemblies. These carriages are displaceable to shear gobs from molten runners of glass. Each shear blade assembly can be adjusted relative to its carriage, in the direction of carriage displacement, and to this end shear blade assembly guide pins are slidingly received in carriage bushings. These bushings have one axial portion which is press fit into a carriage bore and the remaining portion has an enlarged threaded interdiameter which extends the bushing and hence its life and which enables the bushing to be pulled from its bore by a hand tool having a threaded socket.

    • A straight line shearing mechanism which includes a unique pneumatic control system to cause the operation of the shears. One feature involves the cushioning of the piston member of the pneumatic cylinder assembly on the return stroke. Another feature is the provision of an automatic retract to open the shears in the event that the shear blades do not complete their cutting stroke. Also, one blade of a set of shear blades may tilt in the event of excess tension between the blades. Additionally, one shear blade is pivotally adjustable about a pin member having an axis extending in the direction of travel of the blades. Further, the drop guides are horizontally adjustable relative to its associated shear blade in the direction of travel of the shear blade and also adjustable about a vertical axis.

    • A profile control for a shear mechanism of a glass processing machine eliminates cams, gears, etc. otherwise required to oscillate the shear mechanism arms in unison in opposite directions between open and closed positions. The profile is the angular position time curve of the arms as they open and close over a predetermined angular displacement. The profile is controlled by adjustable oscillators and programmable memory (PROM) which determine the commands to a reversible dc motor drive. The control synchronizes the movement of the arms in proper phase relationship with respect to the feeder mechanism of the glass processing machine.

    • A method and apparatus for shearing an elongated gob of glass from the end of a vertically flowing stream of molten glass and tilting the severed gob from its vertical orientation toward a horizontal orientation. A pair of shear blades are mounted for horizontal reciprocation between open and closed positions. In the closed position, the blades are overlapped generally in the center of the stream of molten glass and thereby shear a single gob from the stream. The movement of the blades is so controlled that the lower blade moves appreciably beyond the stream centerline. The upper blade has completed its stroke and is returning to its open position while the lower blade continues its over center travel. The difference in travel is caused by a difference in the length of the drive linkages between the upper and lower shear blades. The net result of the total cycle is to cause the severed gob to rotate about 90.degree. in mid-air before entering a forming mold.

    • In preferred embodiments of the invention illustrated herein there is shown method and apparatus for shearing a plurality of gobs aligned in a row and issuing from a molten glass feeder. A pair of opposed shear carriages are provides which are movable toward and away from each other between open and shearing positions with respect to a row of a gobs. A pair of opposing gob cutting surfaces for each gob to be severed are mounted on the opposed shear carriages. A lever is provided for each shear carriage having one end pivotally connected to its carriage and a portion remote from the carriage end pivotally supported on a frame structure. Each lever is operable to pivot the carriage toward and away from a gob shearing position. Means are connected to each of the shear carriages for pivoting the shear carriages on their levers to translate the arcuate motion impaired to the carrier by the levers to substantially linear motion enabling the gob cutting surfaces to substantially simultaneously engage and sever the plurality of gobs. The motion translating means preferably includes a steering link having one end pivotally connected to the shear carriage a predetermined distance from the lever connection to the carriage, and a means for pivotally supporting the other end of the steering link a fixed distance from the pivotally supported other end of the lever. Novel blade structures, alignment and cooling features are also shown.
