    • The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus (10) for wrapping of an article. The apparatus comprises backing means (20) adapted to be moved against the first and second ends of the article and simultaneously to dispose a wrapper material against said ends. After said wrapper material is disposed against the first end the article is moved relative to the wrapping station and a web-like wrapper material roll (13) thereof such that wrapper material emerges simultaneously from the roll on the top of the article. First folding means (26) are arranged to fold the portions of the wrapper material extending over the width of the first end of the article against the sides. As the second end of the article reaches the backing means (20), said second end is correspondingly engaged with a second surface (21) of the backing means such that the wrapper material becomes disposed between said surface and said second end. The wrapper material web is then cut, and the portions thereof extending over the width of said second end are subsequently folded against the sides of the article by second folding means (28). The side portions of the wrapper extending over the width of the article on the top thereof are disposed against the sides of the article, whereby the wrapper is finished.

    • An inline packaging machine for folding the flaps of a paper board tray blank around a group of articles loaded on the bottom panel of the tray has provision for emergency shut-down whereby any glue applied to the side flaps of the tray will not set before the tray is completely formed. Moveable side flap folding means is provided at the glue station itself for this purpose. The said emergency flap folding means also serves to support the tray end flaps during gluing. The compression section of the machine that normally applies pressure to the glued flaps includes an inlet portion that is re-configured during emergency shut-down for the same purpose, that is to assure that the flaps are completely folded as the glue sets. The glue station and compression section are mounted on beams that are movable toward and away from one another to accommodate trays of various width.

    • The invention contemplates method and apparatus for the rapid and efficient packaging of clusters of articles, such as beverage containers, with a wrapping such as shrinkable plastic film or sheet. The containers are received at one end of a production line in random succession, are converted into groups or clusters appropriate for packaging, with the maximum dimension of the cluster transverse to the direction of conveyor movement. The clusters are then, in the course of their continuous movement along the conveyor, enveloped with sheet material which is paid out in the longitudinal direction of conveyor movement. In final passage of the conveyor through an oven, the sheet material is adhered to bind the envelopment and is shrunk into tensed limited conformance with the cluster profile.
