    • A guide tube formed of a non-magnetically permeable material is coaxially disposed in a brake drum coupled to a rotational shaft and a magnet support tube formed of a non-magnetically permeable material is axially movably supported within the guide tube. A plurality of magnets are supported at equal annular intervals on the outer wall of the magnet support tube and proximal surfaces of ferromagnetic members are coupled to magnetic pole surfaces at opposite ends of the magnet. Actuators reciprocate the magnet support tube between a braking position in which extreme end surfaces of the ferromagnetic members are opposed to an inner surface of the brake drum and a non-braking position in which the ferromagnetic members are withdrawn from the brake drum.

    • A power supply system for a vehicle is provided which is able to supply an electric brake apparatus with necessary power even if an abnormal condition occurs in a battery or a conductor which is connected to the electric brake apparatus. A relay control unit 12 normally brings a relay 11 in a state in which its input terminal is connected to an A terminal 13. This causes a generator 50 or main battery 20 to supply an electric brake apparatus 100 with power via first and second power supply lines 40 and 41 and charges an auxiliary battery 21. If an abnormal condition occurs at main and auxiliary batteries 20 and 21, main and auxiliary power supply lines 30 and 31, first and second power supply lines 40 and 41, the relay control unit 12 brings the relay 21 into a state in which its input terminal is connected to A or B terminal 13 or 14 in response to the abnormal condition.

    • A single row rotating-type eddy current braking apparatus for use with a rotor mounted on a powered shaft comprises a support ring, a plurality of magnets, a plurality of ferromagnetic switching plates, and a support body. The switching plates or magnets are capable of rotating with respect to each other to effect braking. The dimensions of the switching plates and angular displacement of the magnets and switching plates are controlled to minimize drag torque when in a non-braking state. The switching plates can be made to rotate and the bearing can be employed in combination with the rotating and stationary components to alleviate problems such as thermal expansion and wear. The apparatus also utilizes a pneumatic cylinder designed to rotate in the direction of the shaft rotation to achieve a braking state, and can employ a single rod double acting cylinder to switch between braking and non-braking states.

    • An eddy current brake having an electromagnetic pole and a rotor journalled for rotation in a torque delivery shaft of an automotive vehicle driveline, the rotor being rotatably positioned in close proximity to the stator with an air gap between them. The stator comprises steel pole pieces with hollow cores that establish a magnetic circuit for a magnetic flux field. The pole pieces have machine-wound electrical windings. The windings are fastened with pole caps. The hollow core reduces the weight and material of the stator without significantly adversely affecting the braking capacity of the retarder brake for any given speed of rotation of the rotor and for any given number of ampere-turns for the stator windings. The pole caps reduce the magnetic saturation and increases the overall brake torque output.

    • An improved braking apparatus having a jaw type clutch coupled to an electrical solenoid through a ball spline mechanism provides significantly greater braking capacity in a given volume than other types of braking devices. The ball spline is configured to significantly reduce the internal friction load which the electrical solenoid must overcome to apply or release the brake, resulting in a smaller physical size and current draw of the solenoid. The jaw clutch and ball spline are also configured to reduce or absorb shock loads on various internal components of the braking apparatus when the brake is engaged. By configuring the ball spline and jaw clutch to function as shock absorbers in addition to performing their primary functions, the need for separate elastomeric shock absorbers, etc., is eliminated. The electrical solenoid utilizes a pair of strategically shaped and located conical surfaces on the plunger and electromagnetic core of the solenoid to provide an optimal balance between actuation force, stroke, and current draw, by placing the conical surfaces in such a manner that both the primary magnetic flux and the leakage flux generated by the electromagnetic coils combine and contribute to generating the actuation force exerted by the electrical solenoid. A bifilar winding within the electrical solenoid provides a substantially identical amount of actuation force for a given stroke and current draw, when the bifilar winding is provided with electrical current from either of two independent sources of electrical current. Drain passages and a coating that is resistant to retention of a condensate thereupon applied to the conical surfaces of the solenoid provide a mechanism for insuring that fluid condensing on the conical surfaces does not inhibit operation of the electrical solenoid.
