    • An ink roller device which permits easy and smooth removal and installation of an ink roller without soiling hands and which also ensures a prolonged service life of the ink roller, and a numbering machine which is equipped with the ink roller device. The numbering machine is equipped with a numbering main body comprised of a frame, a character wheel unit which is incorporated in the main body so that it is allowed to move up and down between a printing position and a home position thereof, an operating means equipped with an operating knob which enables the character wheel unit to be depressed against the spring force of a resetting spring, a swinging arm mechanism which is provided on the numbering main body and which can be swung as the operating knob is depressed, and a cassette-type ink roller device which is detachably held at the bottom of the swinging arm mechanism. The ink roller device has an ink roller which is detachably mounted on a roller holding frame; the ink roller rolls to contact the printing surfaces of the printing elements constructing the character wheel unit so as to apply ink to the printing surfaces.

    • A method of, and a system for, controlling a constant current hammer in a carrier type daisy wheel printer. A logic table is utilized and first addressed with a carrier velocity code corresponding to character selection time. The table output is a sync point for determining hammer turn on time. The table is next addressed with a combination code made up of the velocity code and a code corresponding to the desired impact force. The table output this time is the actual turn on time for the hammer from the sync point. The on time of the hammer is then controlled by the desired impact force code. This code is also utilized to control the beginning of selection for the next character.

    • A rotatable print disk is mounted on a carrier which traverses along the print line. The disk is moved from each character position to the next by the shortest distance at a constant velocity; thus, the time for the disk to move from a given character position to the next will be variable dependent on this distance. The carrier is moved from one print position to the next, a fixed distance, at a variable speed selected in order that carrier reach the next print position in synchronization with the disk reaching the next character position. Upon such synchronization, a print hammer is fired to print the character while the carriage continues on-the-fly towards the next print position. The apparatus includes means responsive to a synchronization failure for reversing the movement of the carrier towards the previous printing position while permitting the continued movement of the print disk to the next character position, and means for then reinitiating the forward movement of the carrier towards the next print position while retaining the print disk at said next character position until the arrival of the reinitiated carrier at the next print position.

    • Printing methods and apparatus applicable to computer printing of the kind wherein a continuously rotating cylinder is provided with a plurality of rows of type characters operable to imprint paper or other print-receiving media through an ink transfer medium. The characters of each row of characters are identical and unlike the type characters in any other row and the array or arrangement of rows of characters is such with reference to the direction of rotation of the cylinder and the probable frequency of printing of the different characters in the printing of the composition that the characters are presented at a printing station in the order of increasing probability of printing. The type characters on the drum are so constructed with reference to the direction of rotation of the cylinder as to compensate for smearing of the printed characters due to wiping movement of the characters relative to the print-receiving medium and thereby enable the printed characters to present an appearance unmarred by smearing. Some of the type characters on the cylinder are adapted to overprint or be overprinted by other type characters so as to produce printed characters unlike any of the type characters on the cylinder, and others of the type characters are shaped to print characters having more than a single meaning. The type characters include upper case letters, lower case letters, numerals, punctuation marks, and special symbols by means of which a composition can be printed by the computer in virtually the same form as a typewritten composition.

    • This disc printer uses a relatively massive, rigid print disc having a flat face on which two sets of raised character fonts are arranged in separate spirals. Advantageously, the inner font set contains machine readable characters which are printable with high resolution, and a second font set arranged so that the characters are upright as they pass a print zone which is vertically offset from the zone in which the high resolution characters are printed. The print disc acts as the platen for printing. With this arrangement, the same print disc can be used to print characters onto a record medium at two different elevations, while maintaining the medium flat, and without the need to transport the medium vertically. A check printer also is disclosed which uses the print disc to print machine readable, high resolution characters onto the check during linear transport of the check in one direction, and to print other indicia onto the check during linear transport thereof in either the same or the opposite direction.
