    • A press comprises a drum having a heated outer surface and rotatable about an axis and at least one endless belt radially juxtaposed with a portion of the outer drum surface and consisting mainly of an elastically deformable matrix and a plurality of parallel, twisted, and generally annular multifilament cords axially spaced from one another and formed of yarns of an aromatic polyamide imbedded in the matrix. The belt is tensioned and thereby urged radially toward the drum-surface portion. Thus the belt and the drum-surface portion form an angularly extending pressing region. A web to be compressed is fed tangentially to one end of the pressing region and is withdrawn it from the other end thereof. A drive rotates the drum and thereby displaces the web and the belt angularly along the portion so that the web is compressed against and heated by the drum. The cords according to this invention are formed as cables.

    • The apparatus accepts dry stripped crude fiber such as straw or sugar cane wastes, coconut husks, or elephant grass, compacts them into a relatively dense sheet, and bonds a strong surfacing material such as a heavy paper to the faces and edges. The sheet, continuously flowing from the apparatus, is cut into standard lengths and the cut ends are capped with the same surfacing material. A precompactor near the end of an entrance chute into the apparatus uniformly predensifies the incoming fiber prior to its compaction by means of a ram. The ram is carried on roller bearings especially adapted to withstand the weight and other forces associated with the continuous movement of the ram. The compacted material is continuously propelled by the ram and enters a press, where heat and pressure produce a dimensionally stable sheet bonded together partially by natural resins released from the fibers by the heat, and partially by mechanical interlinking between fibers. In the following operation, the sheet is covered with the surfacing material, which is successively folded over and bonded to the edges of the sheet. The surfacing material, provided in discrete rolls, is continuously available from a feeder station which facilitates the substitution of a fresh roll as the material is consumed. In the following sawing and end sealing operations, fully surfaced sheets of standard lengths are produced.

    • A method therefor for forming an air-laid web of dry fibers suitable for use in a wide variety of products ranging from bath and facial tissues to towels having basis weights on the order of 13 lbs./2880 ft..sup.2 to 50 lbs./2880 ft..sup.2 on a high-speed production basis, wherein the web is characterized by random array of individualized fibers substantially undamaged by mechanical action and having a controlled cross-directional profile, and by its freedom from nits, pills, rice and the like, thereby improving both the appearance and the tensile strength of the web. The full-width feeding of dry fibers to a 2-dimensional flow control and fiber screening system is described wherein substantially no cross-flow forces are created in the system, ensuring a uniform cross-directional basis weight profile. The fibers are subjected to only minimal mechanical disintegrating action at all stages of the process subsequent to hammermilling and, thus, shortening, curling and/or rolling of the fibers to aggregated fiber masses is minimized. The aggregated fiber masses which are present in the fiber stream fed to the system are centrifugally and tangentially separated from individualized fibers and soft fiber flocs and removed from the system while maintaining relatively low fiber separation and/or recycling on the order of less than 10%.

    • Particleboard is manufactured by scattering an endless mat of chip and binder material on a series of overlapped mat carriers 17 moving on a forming conveyor 2 beneath a scattering station 1. A cut-off saw 5 is then used to separate the endless mat into mat sections 18 each of which is mounted on a respective mat carrier 17. The overlap between the mat carriers is eliminated and the laden mat carriers are removed from the forming conveyor 2 by an accelerating conveyor 6 which simultaneously operates as an intermediate store and a feed unit for a single storey press 8 arranged immediately after the accelerating conveyor 6. The accelerating conveyor 6 introduces the laden mat carrier into the inlet to the press from where it is transported into the press by internal transport devices of the press. After the mat section has been pressed to form a particleboard a pair of driven rollers 9 extract the mat carrier from the press and feed it towards a separating wedge 10. The mat carrier is deflected downwardly onto a conveyor 11 and the pressed board slides over the top surface of the separating wedge through further rollers 15. As soon as the mat carrier is fully located on a guide conveyor 11 beneath the separating wedge 10 the guide conveyor is pivoted downwardly and its direction of rotation is reversed so that the mat carrier can be transferred to a return conveyor 16. The mat carrier is then transferred back onto the forming conveyor from the return conveyor at a feeding station 14 which also serves to overlap the mat carrier with the preceding mat carrier and to turn the mat carriers over prior to them once again passing through the scattering station 1.

    • Methods and apparatus are presented for continuous-line manufacture of composition board from furnish which is moved in a continuous-flow manner through a processing line and distributed for deposition at a uniform rate over a preselected area to continuously form a mat for compaction.Commercially economical production flow rates are achieved with a lightweight refined wood furnish to form fiberboard having directional properties without relying on pneumatic impulsion while uniformly distributed furnish is delivered substantially free of air turbulence effects enabling fiber orientation by means of an electrical field.Control of movement and accurate metering of furnish are facilitated by continuously over-feeding furnish into the processing line and returning excess furnish as part of an initial distribution of furnish over one dimension of the mat to be formed. The initially distributed furnish is confined in the remaining dimension while being continuously moved in the direction of the mat; the confined profile feed is metered, accelerated by mechanical contact, and then distributed over the full area of deposition. Lightweight fibrous furnish is delivered for screening to separate fiber clusters followed by electrical field orientation of individualized fibers and deposition. The furnish distributed over the forming area is moved along a flow path which is substantially normal to the surface of deposition.
