    • Devices, method, and systems are described for separating metallic objects, such as bullets, from non-metallic objects, such as rubber pieces. In one embodiment, a separator includes a first conveyor, a blower, and a collector. A mixture of metallic and rubber objects are loaded onto the first conveyor and dropped in front of the blower. The blower directs forced air at the rubber and metal mixture, wherein due to the differing physical properties of the two materials, the rubber objects may be laterally displaced, while the metal objects drop into the collector. Metal objects collected in the collector can be transported to a container via a second conveyor.

    • An excavating bucket apparatus pivotally mounts on an articulating arm of a mobile excavating machine. The bucket includes a scoop member that has a frame and defines a top configured for pivotal connection to the excavating machine's articulating arm. Each of the opposed ends of the scoop member can be open to receive and pass through any material dug or scraped by the scoop member, which defines a bottom disposed opposite the top. The bottom of the scoop member can define a generally banana-shaped bottom profile. The frame carries a screening mechanism disposed at the bottom of the scoop member, and the screening mechanism can define at least two stacked screening decks and a generally banana-shaped profile. The screening mechanism can be mechanically vibrated while being isolated mechanically from the scoop member. The frame accommodates different screening mechanisms, which are easily removed and re-installed.

    • Method and apparatus for bulk sorting particulate material such as ore rocks. A conveyor belt carries the material in a continuous stream past a detector responsive to a required characteristic to produce a time sequence of detector signals dependent on degree to which material passing the detector possesses that characteristic. The material is projected from the downstream end of the conveyor belt into free flight trajectory and a deflector plate is moved across the face flight path so that material in some zones of the stream is deflected whereas material in other zones is not deflected. A control circuit monitors the detector signals and causes the deflector plate to move so that said zones are determined by the degree to which the material in them possesses the required characteristic.

    • Method, apparatus and system for sorting objects exhibiting identifiable dynamic response to vibrational phenomena, such objects including tomatoes and other comestibles. The system utilizes an elongate sorting zone incorporating a surface which oscillates at a predetermined frequency and amplitude which varies from a minimum at the input of the zone to a maximum value at the output thereof. Conveyor belts transport the objects to be sorted along the zone for a coding interval promoting their dynamic reaction with the oscillatory surface. Objects with higher resilience characteristic are rejected from the zone, while those exhibiting a lesser resilience are transported therethrough. The oscillatory surface is dynamically balanced and readily mounted upon field harvesting devices. By adjustment of frequency of the sorting zone oscillatory surfaces, a multi-stage sorting system is made available.

    • Objects such as apples are sorted by weight in an apparatus having a train of like sorting cars each pivotal about an axis perpendicular to the transport direction of the cars along a path above a plurality of sorting stations. Each car has a counterweight to one side of its pivot axis with the center of gravity above the pivot axis and is provided with a receptacle adapted to support an object to be sorted above and to the other side of the pivot axis. As the train of cars is moved downstream the counterweight sides are cammed upwardly by an upwardly inclined rail that shortens the moment arm of the counterweight side of the car and increases the moment arm of the object side until the car overbalances and dumps the object out at a sorting station. The camming rail may be constituted by a plurality of short rail sections hinged at points above the sorting stations and vertically adjustable at these points.

    • A chute spreads and feeds stacks or piles of waste material to a machine that passes the mixed solid waste material over the surface of an inclined, rotating disk that has evacuated perforations for gripping some of the waste material and carrying it around the disk. A vacuum box under the disk extends in an arc part way around the disk from the inlet toward the outlet of the machine to create the vacuum near the inlet for carrying material around the disk and to release the vacuum near the outlet. Released material is thrown against an impact wall positioned beyond the vacuum box, and an air blast is directed along the impact wall and through the outlet of the machine. The effect is to spread and open some of the solid waste material, particularly the reusable paper.
