    • Apparatus for transporting knives, sockets, holders and analogous devices for severing, supporting, transferring and/or otherwise manipulating rod-shaped articles which constitute or form part of smokers' products has first and second disks which are rotatable about parallel axes and carry sets of levers each pivotable about an axis which is parallel to the axes of the disks. Each lever of one disk is coupled to a lever of the other disk by a crank unit one pin of which carries a tool. One of the disks is driven and transmits torque to the other disk by way of the levers and crank units whereby the crank units orbit and their pins hold the tools against any change of orientation. Stationary cams have congruent grooves for roller followers which are provided on the levers of the first and second disks, and the cam grooves are configurated in such a way that the cams can reduce or increase the absolute speed of movement of crank pins by moving the pins toward or away from the axes of the respective disks. The tools can transfer rod-shaped articles from a conveyor which transports the articles axially to a conveyor which transports the articles sideways, or vice versa. Also, the tools can constitute sockets which prop spaced-apart portions of a continuous tobacco or filter rod during severing of the rod. The severing mechanism can employ a second apparatus which is mirror symmetrical to the apparatus whose crank units support the sockets, and the tools of the second apparatus include rotary knives cooperating with successive sockets to sever the rod at desired intervals.

    • Cutting or perforating apparatus for a web of material enabling at least one knife on at least one rotary knife shaft to cut the web at adjustable intervals comprises mounting plates for the knife shaft that are fixed on a rotatable plate shaft. The knife shaft is driven by a central gear freely rotatable on the plate shaft. An operative connection between the plate shaft and control gear comprises a first gear fixed to the plate shaft and engaging a second gear rotatable on a fixed pin, a third gear rotatable on said pin and engaging a fourth gear fixed to said central gear. Said second and third gears are coupled by a mechanism comprising a first gear segment connected to said third gear and engaging a second gear segment secured to a freely rotatable pin eccentrically positioned on said second gear, said rotatable pin also carrying a slotted link slidable on a fixed projection. The radial spacing of said projection from said fixed pin is half the eccentricity of said rotatable pin and equal to the radii of the pitch circles of said gear segments.

    • The flying shear is designed as a crank rocker shear for crosscutting metal strips continuously fed thereto, with the crank effecting entrainment of strip cutting knives in the direction of strip movement and return of the knives in the opposite direction, and with the crank radius being adjustable in accordance with different cutting lengths of the strip. A cylindrical drum is rotatably mounted in the shear frame, and the crank axle is mounted within the drum to extend parallel to the axis thereof and for adjustment radially of the drum. Cooperating wedge surfaces are provided on the inner surface of the drum and on the crank axle, and the wedges on the crank axle are adjustable by a threaded spindle, having right hand and left hand threads, threaded through the wedges and rotatable, to adjust the crank radius, by a hydraulic motor. Hydraulically operated piston-cylinder actuators are effective between the inner surface of the drum and the crank axle to maintain the cooperating wedges firmly engaged with each other, and the radius adjusting mechanism rotates as a unit with the cylindrical drum which constitutes a crank shaft. A hydraulically operated mechanical clamp is effective to lock the threaded shaft against movement after adjustment of the crank radius.

    • An improved flying saw of simplified and more economical construction is disclosed which operates smoothly with reduced vibration and which performs in an improved manner at higher operating speeds. The machine has a main crank arm with a rotary saw blade at one end and an adjustable counterweight at the opposite end, a stabilizing crank arm with a counterweight, and a connecting rod causing the arms to rotate in unison. Both arms telescope to permit simultaneous adjustments of arm radius while screw jacks adjust the height of the crank axis relative to the work. The work is supported on a wheel having a special sliding-block eccentric which moves the wheel in a vertical direction to deflect the work into the path of the rotary saw blade. A quickdrop support bracket permits lowering of the wheel and its eccentric away from the path of the work in an emergency situation so that flow from the mill need not be interrupted.

    • The disclosure is directed to a rotary saw for cutting sections of scrap pipe in a pipe forming mill. The saw includes a frame, mounted for rotation above the pass line and carrying cutting saws at each of two ends, enabling two cuts to be made for each revolution of the rotary frame. The individual saw mechanisms are mounted for rotation in the frame and are tied to the stationary frame of the apparatus in a manner to maintain the saw blades at all times in a vertical plane for cutting a horizontally moving pipe. Both of the saws are driven by a common, motor driven shaft, which is concentric with the rotary mounting shaft for the saw frame and is gear-connected to the respective saw blades. A pipe lifting cam is synchronously associated with the rotation of the saw frame, for lifting, supporting and confining the moving pipe each time a saw blade moves into cutting position. The entire scrap saw unit is movably mounted in relation to the pipe pass line, enabling the saw to be retracted well away from the pass line during normal operation of the mill.In conjunction with the new scrap saw, there is desirably provided a kick-out system and receiving bin for the sawed-off scrap sections. The kick-out section, located just downstream of the scrap saw, is selectively operated during periods when the scrap saw is in operation but is deactivated for normal operations of the pipe mill.
