    • A pest-combating composition including sodium lauryl sulfate and one or more of C6-12 fatty acids, preferably lauric and/or capric and/or caprylic acid, soy methyl ester, and 2-undecanone, and methods of combating pests utilizing same, are disclosed. The compositions can include a carrier oil such as silicon oil, soy methyl ester, or a vegetable oil, and can be in the form of an emulsion. The composition may be constituted as a spray composition, an aerosol, a lotion, a paste, or another compositional form. Pests that may be usefully combated with such composition include flying insects, including flies, mosquitoes, and wasps, ants, including arthropods such as fire ants, ticks, fleas, cockroaches, silver fish, thrips, gnats, aphids, Japanese beetles, and agricultural and horticultural arthropods and insects including beetles (potato and bean), flea beetles, fleahoppers, squash bugs, slugs, leaf hoppers, harlequin bugs, milk weed bugs, spiders, mites, lice, rodents, and deer.

    • An animal controllant comprises a shellfish waste material mixed with a binding agent and applied to plants such that the controllant repels or attracts animals therefrom, depending on the animal desired to be controlled. The shellfish waste material typically comprises shell and/or tissue material of crab, lobster, mussel, shrimp, clam, oyster, and mixtures thereof, and the binding agent typically comprises clay, corn oil and/or ground corn. A colorant such as alfalfa, which may also act as a binder, may also be added to the controllant formulation. The controllant may be applied to plants by itself or with the aid of an adhesive. The repellent may also be applied to a substrate such as a flag or a protective tube, which is then positioned on or about the plant. The inventive shellfish waste formulation has been found to protect plants by repelling animals including deer, elk, hares, rabbits, gophers, voles, mountain beavers, and moles and by attracting certain insectivorous and carnivorous animals, such as dogs, wolves and coyotes. The controllant is believed to function by releasing ammonia as the formulation decomposes as a result of exposure to sunlight and water.

    • Compositions and methods for repelling an animal from an area or object are described. The compositions include an animal repellent dissolved or dispersed in a polymer where the repellent is released from the polymer over a period of time in an amount effective to repel an animal from the area. Capture of the repellent in the polymeric matrix allows for concentration of the repellent in an easily movable or removable device. Moreover, the repellent is not diluted by contact with water. The composition is provided in a usable form as a film, a sheet, a shaped article, pellets, or microparticles. The method for repelling an animal from an area or object includes preparing a device incorporating the above compositions and placing the device in an area or near or on an object desired to be protected. The devices can be manufactured by solvent evaporation, solvent removal, coextrusion, spray drying, and hot melt encapsulation. In a preferred embodiment the polymer is ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer and the repellent is methyl nonyl ketone or animal predator urine.

    • Controlled release compositions of matter are disclosed comprising complexes for treating a population of one or more aquatic organisms in a column of water. The complexes comprise at least one system wherein the system comprises at least one bioactive agent as a component selected for treating a population of aquatic organisms, at least one carrier component, and at least one coating component for regulating the controlled release rate and release profile of the bioactive agent in water or at least one bioactive agent and one joint-function component that can serve as both a carrier and coating to regulate the controlled. release rate and release profile of the bioactive agent in water, with or without optional binder components and/or additional formulation materials. The components are selected to sink or float so that the complexes will permeate and/or remain in any planar or volumetric segment of a water column for a period of time that is sufficient to effectively treat a population of aquatic organisms. Methods for treating a column of water are also disclosed which comprises delivering the compositions to a column of water or to a dry preflood area (pretreatment) that will develop in a column of water or a flood area. The composition and process can also be used to treat terrestrial organisms.
