    • A finger hole drilling machine for a bowling ball is disclosed. The drilling machine includes a ball seat assembly, an air suction/expelling valve unit, a marking pen assembly and a turntable assembly. The ball seat assembly has a ball seat housing of the box type for tilting the bowling ball forward and backward, and a ball seat movably placed on the ball seat housing and adapted for tilting the bowling ball leftward and rightward. The drilling machine identically drills the finger holes on a plurality of bowling balls of a bowler, thus to achieve identity of the finger holes of the bowling balls. The drilling machine also readily sets the drilling positions on the bowling balls, thus to save time and to readily finish the finger hole drilling work and to improve the efficiency of the finger hole drilling work.

    • A vacuum dish (10) is rigidly bolted (60) to the support table (12) of a milling machine (14). A bowling ball (74) is set down onto the upwardly directed hard rim (72) of the vacuum dish (10). An elastomeric seal (86) is moved upwardly along the sidewall (66) of the vacuum dish (10), onto an upwardly converging conical surface (70) which borders the rim (72). This puts the elastomeric seal (86) into contact with both the conical surface (70) and an adjacent surface portion of the bowling ball (74). Precision lead screw mechanisms (42, 48, 44, 50) are operated to shift the support table (12) and the vacuum dish supported bowling ball (74) along X and Y axes, to position the bowling ball (74) relative to the vertical axis (Z) of a hole boring bit (30). The hole boring (30) is both rotated and moved vertically downwardly to form a finger or thumb hole in the bowling ball (74). Multiple passes of the hole boring bit (30) may be made into the bowling ball (74), with the bowling ball (74) being adjusted sideways in position a small amount between each pass, to give the hole an oblong cross section.

    • An improved method of and improved apparatus for removing all undesirable material projecting outwardly beyond the true round periphery of a bowling ball. There are many bowlers who desire to have the finger openings changed after they have made use of a ball for a period of time. This change in the position, size and/or relationship of finger openings is generally accomplished by plugging up one or more of the openings in the ball and then relocating or reboring openings to meet the bowler''s desire. In carrying out this process it is frequently done by filling up the original finger opening with a plug driven thereinto or by filling the same with material allowed to harden therein. In order to be sure of filling the opening completely for the modification or relocation thereof, it is common practice to overfill the same so that an excess of material will normally project outwardly beyond the true round periphery of the ball and then to remove the excess of said material to be sure the true round periphery is maintained. This disclosure relates to a most desirable method of removing such excess quickly, accurately and without disturbing the true periphery of the ball.

    • An apparatus for positioning a bowling ball during a drilling process and method that provides reproducible orientations of the ball for accurately modifying and repeating the drilling process is described. The apparatus affixed a bowling ball while exposing a sufficient portion of a surface of the ball where middle finger, ring finger and thumb holes are to be drilled. The apparatus positions the bowling ball for drilling holes of varying pitch without requiring the ball to be removed from its rigidly affixed position within the apparatus. Holes having severe pitches are easily drilled and reproduced, including oval holes having preselected oval rotations. A computer program converts inputted hand measurements to digitized apparatus movements for positioning the ball prior to drilling a desired hole. Digital encoders indicate apparatus movement that is matched with computer output for ease and repeatability in drilling a ball.

    • A control system is disclosed for modifying the flow of hydrogen recycle gas to a reaction apparatus which includes the admixture of a hydrocarbon charge stock with a recycle hydrogen-hydrocarbon stream and passage of the same to a hydrocarbon reaction zone to convert the hydrocarbons to a product effluent stream that is cooled to form a separated, via a separation zone, liquid product stream (withdrawn from the process) and a vaporous hydrogen-hydrocarbon stream, which is divided into the hydrogen-hydrocarbon recycle stream and a hydrogen-hydrocarbon vent stream. The recycle stream is returned to admixture with the hydrocarbon charge stock by a compressor while the vent stream conduit, in connection with the recycle conduit, has a controllable flow restriction device. The control system senses the hydrogen concentration in the reaction zone effluent stream and compares that value with a predetermined selected concentration to develop a signal that is transmitted to the flow restriction device in the vent conduit. In this manner, the amount of hydrocarbon-hydrogen in the recycle stream is controlled by increasing or decreasing the amount of vent gas discharged from the process and thereby the amount of hydrogen-hydrocarbon gas substracted from the recycle gas stream.
