    • A heat exchanger comprises a stack of spaced plates such that elongate plane-parallel fluid-conduit systems are established between adjacent pairs of plates, the plane-parallel conduit systems being in two sets, with the conduit system of one set being interposed between two conduit systems of the other set. Between adjacent plates, a conduit system is closed along its two laterally opposite edges, by rail-like spacers between the involved adjacent plates. The conduit system of at least one set comprises corrugated structures taking the form of extruded sections and having ridges which are connected to the lateral-edge closures of the involved conduit system.

    • A system is provided for interchanging properties such as thermal energy, ions or particles, between fluids, such as liquids or gases. Two fluids flow in countercurrent fashion along small, densely packed passageways within an assembly of individual thin plastic membranes formed into a compact multilayer laminate. Standardized membranes are utilized that are self supporting and unite into an assembly that maintains its structural integrity under high thermal stresses. The membrane configurations dispose the individual passageways in selected relation, maintain the fluids separate, and automatically direct the fluids into and out of the passageway system. The flow passageways for different fluids are interspersed so that the fluid within each small passageway is substantially completely encompassed by flowing volumes of the other fluid and property interchange takes place in three-dimensional fashion directly through the passageway walls. High heat transfer coefficients and total heat transfer efficiency are achieved with low fluid pressure gradients by the use of straight, short laminar flows within the small passageways. Limitations imposed by nonuniformities in flow between the passageways are overcome by means for lateral integration of the property states existing in selected passageway sets.

    • A heat-exchange element has a plurality of heat-exchange components each having a circular heat-exchange plate. The circular heat-exchange plate has a plurality of ribs projecting from a surface thereof and extending generally in one direction. The outer circumferential edge of the circular heat-exchange plate is divided into four substantially equal edges. The circular heat-exchange plate includes a pair of sealing ribs extending respectively along two diametrically opposite ones of the edges substantially parallel to the ribs, and a pair of end walls extending respectively along two other diametrically opposite ones of the edges substantially transversely to the ribs. The heat-exchange components are stacked into a cylindrical shape in which the end walls of each of the circular heat-exchange plates fittingly engage the sealing ribs of another one of the circular heat-exchange plates.

    • A heat exchanger of the plate fin type having first fluid channels and second fluid channels arranged alternately and each separated from the adjacent channel by a flat metal plate. At least one of the first fluid channel and the second fluid channel is formed by a pair of adjacent flat metal plates and a spacer interposed between the flat plates. The spacer comprises a pair of side walls each joined to and interconnecting a pair of opposed edges of the two flat plates at each side thereof, a connecting wall interconnecting the two side walls, and fins provided on the connecting wall at an angle therewith and joined at their forward ends to the flat plate, the fins extending in parallel with the direction of flow of fluid through the fluid channel. The heat exchanger is fabricated by arranging plate plates, spacers, fins and spacer bars in layers and joining the parts together by brazing at the same time.

Additional open and closed spacers may be bolted in position between adjacent plates within the peripheries thereof for rigidity, to reduce vibration of the structure, and to generate turbulence in the fluid to enhance the heat exchange provided by the structure.
