    • A digital, wireless PC/PCS modem is disclosed for incorporation with personal home computers, laptop units, hand-held computer units, and cellular phones for providing wireless communication via satellite transmission. The invention is a device that combines a personal computer (PC) modem with a satellite link and relay system for computers. This will allow the user to establish a communications link with Internet™ access, access to direct dial telephones, faxing on demand, hyperterminal access for remote computer link-up, video, and voice applications. Utilizing existing software and hardware, this invention uses digital satellite technology and combines it with a PC modem for access to various communication links including phone links, without a phone line. In order to accomplish this, the laptop has a type II PCMCIA card slot for receiving the PC modem. An antenna is attached to the plug-in cellular phone card for the modem using a swivel joint assembly.

    • A communication card has a bottom panel, a top cover and a top panel, which is able to accommodate an electronic device. The electronic device has a circuit board and a RF transceiver coupling to the circuit board. The circuit board further comprises at least a metallic ground layer extending along the whole area of the circuit board, such that the dissipation of EMI from the backside of the circuit board can be prevented. The bottom panel and the top panel are both made of an electromagnetic wave penetrable material, and the top cover is made of an electromagnetic wave impenetrable material. The connecting means that can inter-engage with each other are respectively applied on the bottom panel and the top cover, and between the bottom panel and the top panel. After assembling, the circuit board is substantially positioned between the top cover and the bottom panel, and the RF transceiver is substantially positioned between the top panel and the bottom panel. Furthermore, a ring is formed on the bottom panel integrally for easily equipping with users.

    • An expansion card with an integrated fingerprint acquisition system is provided that is able to be connected to a portable computer. In one aspect of the invention, PCMCIA standards are used for the expansion card. The expansion card is built such the fingerprint acquisition system is on a slidable carriage which may extend out from the expansion card housing, or may be retracted into the housing when the fingerprint acquisition system is not in use. A locking mechanism keeps the carriage in the retracted position, and a spring provides the force necessary to slide the carriage into the extended position when pressure is placed on the slidable carriage. An advantage of the invention is that the fingerprint recognition device is small enough to fit within a PCMCIA standard expansion card. Another advantage of the invention is that the fingerprint recognition system, when not in use, is enclosed within a portable computer's housing such that the invention does not use additional desk space in addition to the portable computer itself, other than that necessary for the retractable access portion to extend into an extended position.

    • A communication device for providing wireless communication to a personal data assistant is provided. The communication device includes both a serial port connector and clips to hold the personal data assistant to the communication device. The communication device also includes a modem and a pass-through serial connector. The modem provides wireless communication to both the communication device and the personal data assistant when the personal data assistant engages with the communication device. The pass-through serial connector provides multi-functional capability to the communication device, including simultaneous charging of both the communication device and the personal data assistant. Moreover, during simultaneous charging, the configuration of the pass-through serial connector allows hot-synching of the personal data assistant. The configuration of the pass-through serial connector also provides connectivity between a peripheral device and both the communication device and the personal data assistant.
