When a tone signal from a line is detected after the start of storage of a voice message in response to an incoming call, the voice message presently being recorded is not counted as a received message and a voice message received next is stored in the area in which storage has just been performed. Further, when a DTFM signal, which is a control signal of the automatic answering telephone, is detected, a transition is made to facsimile communication in response to a CNG signal. Thus, erroneous operation in facsimile communication due to a CNG signal recorded in the automatic answering telephone is prevented.

摘要： A device and a method for directing incoming calls from a single input telephone line to either a facsimile machine, a data modem, or a telephone is provided. The device and method provide for "isolating" both a facsimile machine and a data modem until after a predetermined delay period, thus preventing them to answer the call. If a person or answering machine has not answered the call within the delay period, an off-hook condition is simulated to the input telephone line, thus "answering" the call. The signal on the input telephone line is then detected. If the signal includes a DTMF digit, various functions are performed including resetting internal variables. If a facsimile handshake signal is detected, the facsimile machine is rung with a ring simulator. The facsimile machine can then read the incoming handshake signal and proceed in a conventional fashion. If, however, neither of these two signals are detected, and a telephone answering device has not answered the call, the data modem port is rung with the ring simulator. The data modem will then begin receiving the transmitted signal in a conventional fashion. If the call is answered during the delay period provided by the invention, and the transmission is a facsimile handshake signal, the call is automatically transferred to the waiting facsimile machine.

摘要： A communication system is disclosed having a portable radio called receiver and a communication apparatus for calling this receiver. The portable radio called receiver includes a display and a tone generating circuit. The communication apparatus includes a determination circuit, a control circuit, a voice signal recording device, a facsimile device, a memory, and a data processing circuit. The determination circuit determines whether a signal entered through a telephone line is a facsimile signal or a voice signal. The memory stores display data indicating the reception of an image signal, display data indicating the reception of a voice signal, and telephone number data of the portable radio called receiver. The control circuit is responsive to the output of the determination circuit to select one of the plurality of display data stored in the memory. The data processing circuit modulates the calling number of the portable radio called receiver and the selected display data and transmits the same on the telephone line. With such a structure, the display of the portable radio called receiver can display whether the received signal of the communication apparatus is an image signal or a voice signal.
