    • A telephone line management system in communication with a telephone line is provided. In one aspect, the system includes a caller ID module operatively coupled to the telephone line for receiving and displaying a name and a telephone number of a calling party associated with a received telephone call and a false special information tone (SIT) generator module operatively coupled to the telephone line for sending a false signal on a telephone line substantially similar to at least a first part of a SIT in response to an incoming telephone call. In another aspect, the system includes a caller ID module, a false SIT generator module, and a controller for determining when the name and telephone number of a calling party is displayed and when the false signal is operationally coupled to the telephone line. In other embodiments, the system may include an answering machine module or a telephone module.

    • Acoustic dialers are widely used to dial telephone numbers by generating a pair of DTMF tones for each key being depressed. Non-linearities in telephone systems, acoustic dialer loudspeakers, and telephone microphones may cause interfering tones to be produced due to mixing of generated DTMF tones. These interfering tones are especially problematic when they are near the frequencies of the DTMF tones and have similar amplitudes. When these interfering tones are received by a receiver decoder, the decoder may be unable to distinguish the interfering tones from the DTMF tones, and consequently the decoder may reject the DTMF tones received. The present invention prevents these types of rejections by generating a supplemental tone in addition to the normal DTMF tones. This supplemental tone attenuates the interfering tones so that receiver decoders can distinguish the interfering tones from the DTMF tones.

    • An auto-dialer suitable for use as a smart card capable of being acoustically coupled to a telephone and being reprogrammed in response to acoustic signals. The programming and other features of the auto-dialer can be enabled or disabled by the auto-dialer in response to persecuted signals, e.g., a string of DTMF tones. Encryption of calling card and other data into destination telephone numbers is achieved by selectively altering persecuted characteristics of a DTMF tone sequence, such as the duration of tones, the period of silence between tones and the twist between Lo-band and Hi-band tones of DTMF tone pairs in a DTMF tone sequence representing a telephone number. The encryption of data into the telephone number does not affect the ability of standard telephone switching circuitry to recognize the destination number. However, information encrypted into the DTMF signals is undetectable to standard telephone switching circuitry because it is encrypted using DTMF signal characteristics not normally used to represent data. The auto-dialer has a system clock used to drive a pseudo random number generator used in various data security schemes. Calibration features permit the calibration of the audio output and system clock with adjustments being made via the acoustic programming of the auto-dialer with various calibration factors.

    • A vocal frequency suppression apparatus for suppressing selected portions of a vocal signal to prevent inadvertent control of components controlled by dual tone multi-frequency ("DTMF") codes. The vocal frequency suppression apparatus includes a DTMF code generator having a plurality of user-selectable switches. The apparatus further produces a vocal signal which may contain vocal frequencies which correspond to at least one frequency of at least one of the DTMF codes. The apparatus includes a device for suppressing one or more of the vocal frequencies which correspond to frequencies found in the DTMF codes to prevent inadvertent control of any DTMF controlled components by the vocal signal. The suppression device is operably located between the producing device and the DTMF generator.
