    • Methods and systems directed to joining a real-time user session of presentation layer protocol data. The methods describe a user session receiving a presentation layer protocol data stream, wherein the user session comprises a single presentation layer protocol stack. The protocol stack sending a request to a virtual channel to reinitialize. The virtual channel processing an existing request until the request to reinitialize is encountered. The protocol stack modifying the presentation layer protocol data stream to contain a marker. The systems describe a single presentation layer protocol stack. The protocol stack includes a receiver, a virtual channel, and a rollover agent. The receiver receives a presentation layer protocol data stream and receives a message initiating reinitialization. The virtual channel processes a request. The rollover agent sends to the virtual channel a request to reinitialize and modifies the presentation layer protocol data stream to contain a marker.

    • A method and system for using XML for both a protocol layer and application data are described. The method comprises the steps of initiating a connection by a client to a server to form a session, responding by said server to said client indicating that said connection has been successfully completed, submitting a request by said client to said server for service, responding by said server to said client by providing said service and terminating the connection by said client. A session is maintained and a plurality of requests for service by a client and a server responds to those requests by providing the requested service or an error message. The session is maintained until all requests made by a client have been serviced and the requests made by a client may be either synchronous or asynchronous. The system comprises a client and a server coupled to said client by a communication link.

    • Data transfer systems and methods are disclosed. A method of transferring data includes initiating a session for transferring data, establishing a session connection between a first gateway and a second gateway, buffering a predetermined amount of data received by the first gateway, generating a data block using a session-layer protocol when the predetermined amount of data is buffered, and transmitting the data block from the first gateway to the second gateway over the session connection. A system for transferring data includes a first gateway, a second gateway, and a network. The first gateway includes memory for buffering received data and a processor operable to execute a session-layer protocol for generating a data block when a predetermined amount of data is buffered. The first gateway is configured to transmit the data block to the second gateway via the network during a session.

    • A method, computer program, and computer readable medium are disclosed for maintaining communication between first and second mobile units communicating via first and second communications networks, respectively. The first and second units include, respectively, first and second protocol stacks and first and second session layers, which interface between the first and second protocol stacks and first and second software components acting within the first and second units, respectively. The first unit includes first communications hardware with associated drive routines for different communications networks. When the first unit switches from a first to a third communications network, the first session layer maintains communication by selecting the first communications hardware and drive routine required for the third communications network. The identities of the first and second units are maintained by the first and second session layers and retained during the first unit's switching of communications networks.
