    • A high temperature superconducting synchronous motor having an inductor topology that increases the air gap flux density in direct relation to motor power density by trapping flux and concentrating it in the air gap to obtain more power in the same volume or smaller volume for the same power, and whose geometry enables the induction motor to be lighter than superconducting motors without the inductor topology, the motor being positioned in a housing, and the motor comprising: a) stator means having an armature winding to provide a stator field; b) rotor means positioned within the stator field and on which is disposed at least two polygon shaped ring or coil means along the same axis to provide separated and spaced apart relationship field solenoids; c) at least three high temperature superconducting plate means disposed in alternating relationship between the ring or coil means to hold the ring or coil means together to trap magnetic field and shape flux lines; and d) cooling means to cool the superconducting in the rotor to a temperature below the critical temperature of the superconducting plate means.

    • A field excitation system is provided for a synchronous machine which is operated both as a motor and as a generator. Field excitation is provided by a rotating machine which is connected as a brushless exciter when the synchronous machine is in the generating mode and connected as a rotating transformer when the synchronous machine is in the motoring mode. This conversion is achieved by selectively switching the field winding connections of the exciter/transformer and by switching the voltage applied to the field windings from DC to AC. When the main machine is to be operated in the motoring mode, a three-phase alternating voltage is applied to the exciter field winding and the field winding connections are switched so that the field windings are in a three-phase WYE connection and the machine functions as a rotating transformer. The alternating voltage induced in the rotor winding is rectified and provides field excitation for the main machine. As the main machine comes up to speed, a speed at which the machine is to be operated as a generator, the rotating machine is reconnected to operate as a brushless exciter generator. To this end, the field windings are connected in series, the three-phase alternating voltage is removed and a DC voltage is applied to the field windings. The exciter now operates as a standard inside-out synchronous exciter generator to generate a voltage in the armature rotor windings which is rectified to supply the DC field for the main machine rotor. In this fashion, DC excitation for the main synchronous machine is provided both when the machine is initially started from standstill in the motoring mode and when it switches to the generating mode.

    • An apparatus including a rotating member, a resolver and a mounting structure. The resolver includes a resolver stator and a resolver rotor fixedly mounted on the rotating member via a mounting structure. The mounting structure has a low magnetic relative permeability and isolates the resolver rotor from the rotating member by preventing direct contact between the rotating member and the resolver rotor. The disclosed apparatus may be an electric machine having a rotor fixed to the rotating member and be suitable for use in a hybrid vehicle. The mounting structure advantageously has a relative permeability of no greater than about 2 and may be formed out of stainless steel material. The rotating member may be a rotor hub formed out of steel material having a relative permeability of at least about 50.
