摘要： A viscous sealing material is applied to a communications cable by being forced out of a container by means of a heatable pressure plate having a bore and a pump adjacent to the bore; the sealing material is conveyed by the pump through a conduit to a chamber, in which the sealing material is introduced under pressure into and around an already stranded cable core; the pressure plate includes a plurality of preferably helically coil electrical heating elements separated from each other and projecting therefrom for penetrating into the sealing material in the container when the pressure plate applies pressure to the sealing material so that it is progressively liquified and can be pumped out of the container.

摘要： A method is indicated for producing lengthwise waterproof cables, with a jacket that is formed around the transmitting elements containing the core. The voids in the core and between the core and the jacket are filled with a viscous sealing material, which is pumped from a storage container by a feed pump driven by a speed-controlled electric motor, and supplied to a pressure chamber. The core is passed through the pressure chamber so that the voids in the core are filled with the viscous sealing material. The pressure in the pressure chamber is continuously measured and is kept constant with a regulator. Sealing material leaving the pressure chamber is directed to a catch-container equipped with a level switch. From there it is supplied to the pressure chamber by a feedback pump driven by a speed-controlled electric motor, which is switched on and off by the level switch. Like the speed of the electric motor driving the feed pump, the speed of the electric motor driving the feedback pump is controlled by the regulator.

摘要： This invention fills communication cables with a filling compound of petrolatum mixed with some polyethylene to prevent dripping at temperatures of 80*C and below. A rapid cooling of certain compounds from above the melting point changes the characteristics of the compound so as to bring the drip temperature to this value. An impregnator apparatus is supplied with metered quantities of the compound at a rate coordinated with the speed of travel of a cable through the impregnator apparatus; and the cable is impregnated with the water repellent compound in a solid though soft condition (as opposed to liquid), and with uniform results lengthwise of the cable. The cable itself acts as the impeller for the compound in the impregnator; and the impregnator is kept full under pressure by a pump with a by-pass.

摘要： A multiconductor cable core is provided with a barrier of sealing material by pumping the sealing material from a thermostatically controlled storage vessel to a cable feeding station while at a temperature just above that at which crystallization begins and transferring sealing material from the cable feeding station to the cable core while still at such a temperature. The material is cooled to effect crystallization by abstraction of heat by the insulated conductors constituting the core to cause sufficient sealing material to become solidified to form an effective moisture barrier. The sealing material while at such a temperature is preferably continuously circulated around a ring main in which is located a plurality of cable feeding stations for transferring the material to a core curing a conventional stranding process.
