    • A magnetic read head and associated circuitry for reducing side track noise and decreasing read width, thereby providing increased data density. The magnetic read head includes first and second sensor elements that are aligned with one another in a data track direction, with the first sensor element being wider than the second sensor element. Electrical circuitry is connected with the read head in such a manner as to read a first signal from the first sensor element and a second signal from a second sensor element. Because the second sensor element is wider than the first sensor element, it will read more side signal noise from adjacent data tracks than will the second sensor element. The circuitry connected with the first and second sensor element detects and distinguishes the side signal noise and separates it out from the data signal, based sensor width difference and location difference.

    • A head assembly according to one embodiment includes at least one module having magnetic transducers for reading and/or writing to a magnetic tape; electronics electrically coupled to the transducers, the electronics comprising at least one of amplifiers; bias circuitry; write drivers; write resistors; a memory device; and a chip with at least one of identification information about the head assembly, customization data, and firmware; and a connector for detachably interfacing to a drive having a head region for receiving the head assembly. A method according to one embodiment includes inserting a head assembly in a head region of a magnetic tape drive, the head assembly having one or more modules containing a plurality magnetic transducers and one of amplifiers, write drives, or bias circuitry; wherein upon receiving the head assembly the drive is at least one of a functional drive, an updated drive, and a legacy drive.

    • A system according to one embodiment includes at least two write transducers for writing to a magnetic medium; and a low reluctance path from a first pole of a first of the write transducers to a second pole of a second of the write transducers. In another embodiment, either 1) the first pole of the first write transducer and the second pole of the second write transducer are positioned close enough to each other that a low reluctance path is present from the first pole of the first write transducer to the second pole of the second write transducer, or 2) a magnetic strap extends between the first pole of the first write transducer and the second pole of the second write transducer thereby creating a low reluctance path therebetween.
