    • An information recording apparatus includes an information obtaining unit, a sign arrangement generating unit, a sign arrangement recording unit. The information obtaining unit obtains information to be recorded on a recording medium. The sign arrangement generating unit, based on information to be obtained by the information obtaining unit, generates an arrangement having three or more kinds of signs for expressing the obtained information. The sign arrangement recording unit, while shifting recording positions of a recording area included in the recording medium, records physical features sequentially into the respective recording positions of the recording area included in the recording medium. And each physical feature corresponds to one kind of the signs.

    • Circuitry for distinguishing each value in a read signal magnetically recorded in ternary-3 position modulation in which the values 1, 2 and 0 are detected and equalized into a singlet, a doublet and absence of magnetic flux change. The circuitry first determines the position locations of each singlet peak and doublet crossover point to establish proper timing of the output signals and then identifies the particular type of signal appearing at the timing points in the read signal sequence. Singlets are identified by the much greater amplitudes in the integrated read signal. Doublets are identified as waveforms having slopes at zero crossovers that correspond in polarity to that of the previous singlet. A novel detector circuit is provided that can correctly identify doublets in a code sequence, irrespective of the presence of a previous singlet, when a recording rule is followed that includes the insertion of a number of consecutive ternary 0 symbols into the recorded signal.

    • A hologram recording and reproduction method is configured such that the number of values which can be implemented per one pixel is increased from two according to a conventional method to three or more to achieve increase of the data recording capacity. While two values are conventionally represented by two different values of “0” and “1” of the amplitude, for example, phases “0” and “π” are combined with the amplitudes “0” and “1” thereby to make it possible to represent three values of “0,” “1” and “−1” (amplitude “1”×phase “π”). In particular, a two-value data train of “0” and “1” is converted into another data train of three values of “0,” “1” and “−1” in accordance with a rule for encoding determined in advance, and the amplitude “0” is allocated to pixels of the value “0”; the amplitude “1” (phase “0”) is allocated to pixels of the value “1”; and the amplitude “1” and the phase “π” are allocated to pixels of the value “−1,” to carry out recording. Increase of the data recording capacity can be achieved thereby.
