    • A method of coin testing is provided in which a laser beam (13) is directed onto a face of a coin (4) and a laser detector (3) is used to detect where the laser beam is intercepted by the coin and where the laser beam is not intercepted by the coin, so as to obtain an indication of a characteristic of the face of the coin. The characteristic of the coin is used to identify the coin. The invention also relates to an apparatus for coin testing, which comprises a laser source (11) to direct a laser beam (13) on a face of a coin (4), a laser detector (3) for detecting where the laser is intercepted by the coin and where the laser is not intercepted by the coin, and a signal-processor (14) which obtains an indication, from an output of the laser detector (3), of a characteristic of the face of the coin which is used to identify the coin.

    • A coin discriminating apparatus includes a plurality of light emitting elements, an area sensor for optically detecting light reflected by the coin and producing pattern data of the coin, a mirror member provided on one side portion of the coin along the coin passage at a predetermined angle with an axis of the coin for reflecting light reflected from a side surface of the coin and leading the light to the area sensor, and a coin discriminator for discriminating the coin based on first pattern data produced by detecting light reflected from a lower surface of the coin and second pattern data produced by detecting light reflected by the side surface of the coin. According to the thus constituted coin discriminating apparatus, it is possible to discriminate coins by optically detecting the pattern of the obverse or reverse surface and the side surface of a coin with simple structure and with high accuracy.

    • Coding systems utilizing machine-readable coding are disclosed. The coding systems are extremely simple to use and preferred embodiments of the machine-readable coding require no external reference or reference code or starting point or orientation for reading or decoding. The number of usable codes for any given number of code elements (bits or digits) is maximized, or, conversely, a minimum number of code elements is required for a given application, thus allowing each code element to be of maximum size for a given coding area. Also, methods and apparatus for encoding objects, and for reading, decoding, processing and using the information obtained from such encoded objects are disclosed. The coding may be applied to objects such as casino chips, currency, automated production line components, consumer products, household items, zip coded objects, etc. The coding system and systems using the coding can be mployed for enabling positive real-time detection of counterfeits (rather than mere counterfeit deterrence, cash monitoring, information gathering, object identification, etc., at minimum cost with maximum reliability and real-time speed. Preferred embodiments of systems concern round casino chips and paper money. Signals and data may be encoded independently of physical objects while obviating the need for any reference or synchronization in the coding.

    • The selector assembly includes a support plate and a rail that directs a coin into a coin serration detector assembly. The serration detector assembly includes a body pivotally mounted to the support plate, and a wire feeler attached to the body and providing a wire portion disposed with its side transverse to and engageable with the edge of a coin moving in a predetermined trajectory from the rail. The wire portion side engages the serrations of a serrated coin to rotate the wire feeler into the path of the serrated coin to change the trajectory and direct the serrated coin in one direction, and engages a substantially nonserrated coin to rotate the wire feeler away from the trajectory and permit movement of the nonserrated coin in another direction.
