The system includes a language model including a collection of n-grams from a corpus, each n-gram having a corresponding relative frequency in the corpus and an order n corresponding to a number of tokens in the n-gram, each n-gram corresponding to a backoff n-gram having an order of n−1 and a collection of backoff scores, each backoff score associated with an n-gram, the backoff score determined as a function of a backoff factor and a relative frequency of a corresponding backoff n-gram in the corpus.

    • The present technology dynamically generates auto-suggest dictionary data from translation data stored in memory at a server. The auto-suggest dictionary data may be transmitted to a remote device by the server for use in language translation. The auto-suggest dictionary data may be transferred as part of a package which includes content to be translated, translation meta-data, and various other data. The auto-suggest dictionary data may be generated at a first computing device, periodically or in response to an event, from translation data stored in memory. The auto-suggest dictionary may be transferred to a remote device along with content to be translated and other data, as part of a package, for use in translation of the content at the remote device.

    • The present invention relates to an automatic translation method.When a sentence in a source language is translated into a sentence in a target language, the method comprises: a step (1) of extracting the set of sentence portions of the target language from a textual database that correspond to a total or partial translation of the source sentence to be translated; a step (2) of determining all the assemblies of these target sentence portions that overlap the source sentence; a step (3) of choosing the best assemblies according to a criterion of maximum overlap between the target sentence portions assembled in the preceding step and according to a criterion of minimizing the number of assembled elements; a step (4) of determining the target sentence by choosing the best assembly according to coherence criteria. The invention is notably applicable to the translation of texts in a rare language.More generally, it applies to translation with no previously established bilingual texts.

    • The gaming and linguistic data generating technique described herein provides an online multiplayer game that can generate linguistic data, such as, for example, monolingual paraphrase data or multilingual parallel data, as a by-product of the game. The game is designed along the lines of sketch-and-convey paradigm. The game can be played as follows. A phrase is chosen from a phrase corpus and is given to one player (the “Drawer”) who then conveys it to the other player (the “Guesser”) by drawing a picture of the phrase. The Guesser guesses at the components of the phrase either in the same language as the phrase or possibly in a different language. If the Guesser's guesses converge to the chosen phrase, this generates monolingual paraphrases (if the game is played in the same language), and parallel text (if the game is played between multilingual players or two monolingual players in different languages).

    • A method provides communication of information between a first and second communicator utilizing a plurality of lexicons. The first lexicon has a plurality of words in the language of the first communicator, each word in the first lexicon having an assigned numerical value determined by the frequency of use of the word, or an equivalent of the word, in a base language. The second lexicon functions similarly in the language of the second communicator. The numerical values are transmitted via a wired or wireless telecommunication system, whereby information is communicated between the first and second communicator by substituting numerical values common to both the first and second communicator for words representing the information communicated.
