    • According to one embodiment of the invention, a control valve for regulating temperature comprises a conduit, a fluid limiter, a restoring actuator, an opening actuator, and a restoring actuator chamber. The conduit has an inlet, an outlet, and an opening between the inlet and the outlet. The inlet is operable to receive fluid into the conduit and the outlet is operable to dispense of fluid out of the conduit. The fluid limiter is operable to at least partially cover the opening and thereby resist flow of fluid through the opening. The restoring actuator is operable to provide a force that moves the fluid limiter toward the opening to resist flow of fluid through the opening. The opening actuator is operable to provide a second force that moves the fluid limiter away from the opening to allow the flow of fluid through the opening. The opening actuator is activated based on a temperature of fluid in the conduit. The restoring actuator chamber is disposed around the restoring actuator and has a passage in communication with fluid upstream of the opening.

    • A ring for mounting a drive element on a valve using a snap connection is provided with a collar and a plurality of locking elements, which together form a receptacle for a shoulder of the drive element. The locking elements are segments of a sheet metal annulus and extend through slots in the collar to the interior of the ring, and include flanges as tool gripping locations. An O-ring disposed in a slot in the collar radially inwardly biases the locking elements, the leading edges of which are chamfered. The shoulder includes outward projections that are correspondingly chamfered and push the locking elements outward as the drive element is inserted into the ring. As the locking elements recoil, a snap connection is made. The ring may be screwed or snapped onto the valve, and the configuration allows a drive element to be snapped into place using the ring or screwed directly onto the valve using a screw cap, without modifying the drive element.

    • A valve for automatically modulating a flow of a stream of fluid, the valve including a housing having a wall defining an interior cavity. The interior cavity is in fluid communication with the stream of fluid. A modulator is mounted within the interior cavity and includes a shell in fluid communication with the stream of fluid and a flexible flow adjustment member within the shell. The flexible flow adjustment member has a variable diameter passage therethrough which is also in fluid communication with the stream of fluid. A circumferential void is located between the flexible flow adjustment member and the shell and a thermally reactive material is within the void and in contact with the shell for thermal communication therebetween. A tool is used to assemble the valve. The tool includes a base plate, and a receiver adjacent to the base plate. The receiver has an internal passage therethrough for receiving a segmented cone having at least one radial cut therethrough. A longitudinal bore extends through the segmented cone and has a forming portion for imparting a shape to the valve.

    • Liquid flow through a conduit in a branch of a hydronic system provided with a balancing valve and, in series therewith, a metering valve to obtain a desired rate of flow in the branch is regulated by positioning immediately adjacent an accelerated-flow zone in the metering valve in the conduit a pitot having an upstream side directed upstream against a direction of flow through the conduit and a downstream side directed downstream in the flow direction. The metering valve is settable in a plurality of predetermined positions each corresponding to a respective flow cross section through the conduit. A differential pressure meter is connected to both sides of the pitot, the one of the predetermined valve positions is selected that gives a near full-range reading on the meter, and the metering valve is set in this selected one position. The pressure-differential reading on the meter is monitored and the balancing valve is adjusted to regulate flow therethrough until the read pressure corresponds to a level itself corresponding to the desired rate of flow in the branch.

    • A Solar Heater system including an absorber panel having an inlet and an outlet connected to a water supply tank. A valve is located in both the inlet and outlet connections and at least the inlet valve is temperature responsive so as to close when the temperature of the panel contents falls below a first predetermined temperature. The outlet valve may be temperature or flow responsive so as to close under the temperature or flow conditions prevailing when the inlet valve closes and thereby isolate the panel from the tank. A temperature responsive dump valve is connected to the panel and opens when the temperature of the panel contents falls below a second predetermined temperature which is lower than the first predetermined temperature and thereby empties the panel contents. The inlet and dump valves are preferably formed by a single combination valve having a temperature responsive element which controls both a primary valve member and a secondary valve member. The primary valve member controls flow between inlet and outlet ports of the valve and the secondary valve member controls flow between the outlet port and a dump port. The temperature responsive element has part thereof exposed externally of the valve body and is substantially insulated against the influence of the temperature conditions existing within the body of the valve.
